Maravai LifeSciences Holdings supplies companies developing drugs, vaccines and diagnostics with materials to make them and tests to check for production impurities. Biopharmaceutical companies are its main customers. Product sales generate most revenue; manufacturing and analytical services contribute much less.
TriLink brings in most of the revenue. It sells mRNA, other nucleic acids and ingredients used to produce them, including CleanCap reagents that add a cap to mRNA. Customers can buy these materials or pay TriLink to manufacture mRNA and support development and scale-up. The smaller Cygnus business sells tests and related services that help biologic drug manufacturers detect proteins left behind by production cells and other impurities as they develop and commercialize medicines.
Demand depends on customers’ research budgets, progress through drug development and decisions to outsource rather than produce materials themselves. Order timing and customers’ unused inventory also affect purchases. Some products are labeled for research use only, not clinical diagnostics; the FDA could require Maravai to stop distributing them if their actual intended use requires regulatory compliance that has not been met.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Repligen and Maravai’s Cygnus both depend on biologic drugmakers’ production and investment: Repligen sells filtration, separation and process-analysis products, while Cygnus sells tests for manufacturing impurities. Demand for Repligen’s manufacturing products offers a read on the production activity that also supports Cygnus’s test sales.
Thermo Fisher Scientific competes with Maravai for drug developers’ spending on nucleic-acid reagents, enzymes and mRNA development and manufacturing. Its Invitrogen and pharmaceutical-services businesses are the parts that overlap with Maravai’s TriLink offerings.
Danaher both competes with Maravai and shares its exposure to biologic manufacturing demand: IDT sells custom nucleic-acid products against TriLink, while Cytiva and Pall serve the manufacturing market that buys Cygnus’s impurity tests.
Bio-Techne competes with Maravai for biopharmaceutical researchers’ and bioprocessing customers’ purchases of research reagents and analytical products, particularly tools for antibody-based testing and protein analysis. Its Protein Sciences business is the part to watch alongside Cygnus’s impurity-testing products.
Moderna’s mRNA vaccine sales offer a demand signal for the vaccine programs that historically drove large orders for Maravai’s mRNA synthesis and capping products, not evidence of a direct customer tie. Watch Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine sales: Maravai’s high-volume commercial-vaccine CleanCap orders accounted for an estimated 25.4% of 2024 revenue but generated no revenue in 2025.
Agilent Technologies competes with Maravai for therapeutic developers’ spending on making short nucleic-acid chains, or oligonucleotides, and related nucleic-acid products. Agilent’s contract manufacturing of oligonucleotide drug ingredients is the business to watch, rather than its broader laboratory-instrument sales.
Revvity and Maravai both depend on drug developers’ research spending: Revvity sells tools for cell, gene and protein research, while Maravai sells nucleic-acid reagents and analytical products. Revvity’s Life Sciences sales to pharmaceutical and biotechnology researchers are the relevant comparison, rather than its diagnostic-testing business.
Azenta competes with Maravai for part of researchers’ budgets for having nucleic acids made externally: Azenta offers gene synthesis, while Maravai sells custom nucleic-acid products. Watch gene-synthesis demand in Azenta’s Multiomics business, rather than its sample-storage business.
Danaher Corporation earningsDHR
Danaher’s report, especially any IDT-specific results, can show whether customers are still buying custom nucleic-acid products that compete with Maravai’s TriLink offerings.
Compare Danaher’s commentary on IDT’s nucleic-acid demand with the broader Life Sciences results. If IDT-related demand is strong while the wider business is weak, customers are still buying these products and competition for TriLink may be sharper. If both are weak, tighter customer spending is a more likely explanation; Danaher’s results alone would not show that TriLink is losing share.
Repligen Corp earningsRGEN
Repligen’s report will show whether biologics manufacturers are buying its production and process products, a demand signal for the manufacturing activity that also supports Maravai’s Cygnus testing business.
Look for stronger demand for Repligen’s filtration, separation and process-analysis products, alongside its comments on biologics manufacturing. Stronger demand suggests more activity in the production processes Cygnus serves, which can support testing sales; weaker demand points to less support from that market. Repligen’s results are a signal, not a substitute for Cygnus’s own sales.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision on its benchmark interest rate matters to Maravai because its $294.2 million term loan is priced off Term SOFR, so higher borrowing costs can leave less cash for operations and investment.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher-than-expected rates can push up costs on Maravai’s SOFR-linked loan, leaving less cash for its operations and planned commercial, marketing and research spending.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower-than-expected rates can ease costs on Maravai’s SOFR-linked loan, leaving more cash available for operations and planned commercial, marketing and research spending.
Maravai LifeSciences Holdings, Inc. earningsThis company
Maravai’s report will show whether TriLink’s nucleic-acid sales can recover and Cygnus can keep growing enough to offset the loss of commercial-vaccine orders.
Read TriLink and Cygnus revenue alongside gross margin and adjusted EBITDA. A TriLink recovery with continued Cygnus growth would show that demand for other nucleic-acid products and biologics-safety testing is filling some of the gap left by lost vaccine orders, helping Maravai use its facilities more fully. If TriLink keeps shrinking and Cygnus cannot make up the difference, sales may remain too low to absorb facility costs, leaving profitability under pressure.
Bio-Techne Corp. earningsTECH
Bio-Techne’s report will show demand for Protein Sciences products that compete with Maravai’s Cygnus for customers’ spending on testing and analysis.
Focus on Bio-Techne’s Protein Sciences sales and demand commentary, and compare them with its other life-sciences activity. Firm demand for these products would show that customers are still spending on protein analysis and testing, while also underscoring the budget Cygnus must compete for. If Protein Sciences demand and broader research spending both weaken, a shrinking market is a more plausible pressure on Cygnus than a single rival taking its orders.
Moderna, Inc. earningsMRNA
Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine sales offer a read on the commercial-vaccine demand that once drove large CleanCap orders for Maravai, but do not establish a direct customer relationship.
Look at Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine sales and related demand commentary. A recovery would suggest the commercial-vaccine market may be becoming more active, supporting the possibility of renewed demand for Maravai’s high-volume CleanCap products, but it would not show that Maravai received an order. Flat or falling sales would leave less reason to expect a CleanCap recovery through this channel, so TriLink would need demand from other products.
