Company

Company overview

Avantor supplies the materials and equipment customers need to conduct research, run tests and manufacture treatments. Laboratory Solutions generates most of its revenue, with Bioscience Production providing the other main business. Customers include biopharmaceutical and healthcare companies, universities, government institutions and technology manufacturers. Through VWR, they buy laboratory consumables and equipment sourced from Avantor and outside suppliers, and can pay for procurement, inventory management and onsite support.

Avantor also manufactures specialized materials, including J.T. Baker high-purity bioprocessing chemicals and NuSil silicone for human implants. It works with customers during development to tailor materials to their requirements; some become specified in customers’ approved production processes and continue to be purchased as those processes move into commercial production.

Most sales come from offerings Avantor considers recurring, but customers generally order without minimum purchase commitments and can stop buying. Revenue is spread across customers rather than dominated by one buyer. The business depends on continued laboratory and production activity, access to third-party supplies and materials that meet strict customer and regulatory standards. Avantor does not manufacture most of the products it sells, so supplier availability and terms matter. Exports of certain controlled goods also require prior approval under U.S. export-control rules.

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific competes for Avantor’s laboratory and biopharma customers through its Fisher Scientific distribution channel and life-science products, against VWR and Avantor’s own supplies. Watch its laboratory products and life-science sales for evidence of demand and competition in those customer groups.

  • Danaher competes with Avantor to supply laboratories and biological drug production, including products that move fluids through research and manufacturing processes. Its Biotechnology and Life Sciences results are the relevant areas to watch, rather than its Diagnostics business.

  • Repligen Corp competes with Avantor for biological drug manufacturers’ spending on fluid management, filtration and products that separate materials, known as chromatography. Sales in those product lines offer a closer comparison with Avantor’s Bioscience Production business than laboratory research equipment does.

  • Agilent Technologies competes with Avantor for research and analytical laboratories’ purchases of instruments, chromatography consumables and services that keep laboratory work running. Watch CrossLab consumables: most work with other manufacturers’ instruments, so their sales need not follow Agilent’s own instrument sales.

  • Bio-Rad Laboratories’ Life Science business competes with Avantor to sell reagents, consumables and equipment to biological research laboratories and biopharma manufacturers, including quality-control work. Focus on Life Science sales rather than the company total: that business accounted for approximately 40% of net sales in the year ended December 31, 2025.

  • Bio-Techne competes with Avantor for research, diagnostics and biological drug production customers buying life-science reagents and laboratory products. Its Protein Sciences business, which includes reagent and analytical products, is the larger area to watch, accounting for approximately 72% of net sales in fiscal 2026.

  • QIAGEN both competes with Avantor in products that prepare biological samples for testing and supplies reagents that Avantor sells to CareDx. Watch reagent supply disruptions: difficulties in Avantor’s supply from QIAGEN could force CareDx to reconfigure testing or interrupt sales.

  • Revvity competes with Avantor for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic customers buying research products and tools and services for laboratory work. Its Life Sciences sales to those customers are the relevant comparison, rather than its Diagnostics business.

  • Waters competes with Avantor for analytical laboratories’ purchases of chromatography columns, consumables and equipment used to separate and analyze samples. Watch column and consumable sales separately from instrument service and support, which represented over 35% of Waters sales in 2025.

  • Mettler-Toledo and Avantor both depend on life-science and chemical customers’ research and quality-control activity: the former sells precision laboratory instruments and services, while Avantor sells consumables and equipment. Watch its laboratory instruments and related services, which accounted for approximately 56% of net sales in 2025.

  • Bruker and Avantor depend on the budgets of life-science, biopharmaceutical and materials laboratories, which buy Bruker’s scientific instruments and Avantor’s laboratory supplies. Bruker’s sales to these laboratories can help gauge the spending backdrop for Avantor’s Laboratory Solutions business.

  • Charles River Laboratories and Avantor both need pharmaceutical and biotechnology research programs to advance and retain funding: customers pay Charles River for nonclinical discovery and safety testing, and Avantor for laboratory materials. Watch Charles River’s Discovery and Safety Assessment revenue for a view of activity in those programs.
