Most of 3M’s sales come from products businesses use to manufacture, assemble, repair and protect. Its largest business, Safety and Industrial, supplies products such as industrial adhesives, abrasives and worker protection equipment. Transportation and Electronics supplies materials used in vehicles, displays and electronics production. A smaller Consumer business sells household and office products, including cleaning supplies, picture-hanging accessories and stationery. Its former Health Care business is now the independent company Solventum.
Customers buy from 3M directly or through distributors, retailers and online channels. These partner relationships help its products reach users across many industries and countries. Sales depend on customers choosing 3M’s products for their work and designs, distributors’ purchasing and inventory decisions, and new products gaining acceptance.
3M stopped manufacturing PFAS chemicals at the end of 2025, but that did not end its exposure to them. It still addresses contamination from past production and is working to replace PFAS-containing materials bought from other suppliers. Some replacement products require customer qualification or regulatory approval. PFAS restrictions and plant discharge limits can require product changes, cleanup and treatment work, and can constrain factory operations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Illinois Tool Works and 3M both depend on factory and vehicle production, competing to sell industrial adhesives and automotive materials to manufacturers. ITW’s sales to vehicle makers are worth watching for clues to demand facing 3M’s automotive materials.
Avery Dennison competes with 3M for industrial converters and commercial-branding customers buying adhesive materials and graphic films. Watch its sales of those materials for signs of competitive pressure on 3M’s adhesives and commercial-branding business.
PPG and 3M sell different supplies into the same vehicle production and repair markets: PPG provides coatings, while 3M provides bonding materials, abrasives and autobody-repair products. PPG’s coating sales to vehicle makers and repair shops offer a read on activity among customers that also buy 3M’s materials.
RPM International, Inc. competes with parts of 3M’s industrial and consumer range through adhesives, sealants and repair products, leaving both exposed to spending on maintenance and home improvement. Its sales to industrial maintenance customers and consumers offer clues to demand for those parts of 3M’s business.
Solventum, 3M’s former healthcare business selling medical and dental products and healthcare software, no longer contributes consolidated earnings, but goods-and-services agreements, indemnities and 3M’s ownership exposure still connect their results. Watch service reimbursements and changes in the value of 3M’s Solventum stake, as well as any failure by Solventum to meet its agreements that could leave 3M with losses.
Lincoln Electric and 3M both supply industrial fabrication operations: customers use Lincoln’s welding and cutting products alongside 3M’s metalworking abrasives and protective equipment. Lincoln’s sales to manufacturers and welding-product users offer a gauge of activity that also supports demand for 3M’s finishing and safety products.
3M Company earningsThis company
3M’s report will show whether demand improves in Transportation and Electronics while Safety and Industrial protects its margins.
Read each segment’s organic sales change alongside its operating margin. Organic sales exclude currency effects and acquisitions or divestitures. Better sales in Transportation and Electronics with margins holding steady would show that demand is recovering and turning into profit beyond Safety and Industrial. Continued weakness there, or falling segment margins, would point to narrow growth or sales that are not offsetting operating pressure. The test is whether growth broadens without giving up profitability.
Illinois Tool Works Inc. earningsITW
Illinois Tool Works’ report will show how vehicle-maker demand is affecting its sales, a clue to demand for 3M’s automotive materials.
Look at Illinois Tool Works’ sales to vehicle makers alongside the sales change in 3M’s Transportation and Electronics segment. If both strengthen, automaker demand is improving and supports a firmer market for 3M’s automotive materials. If ITW’s related sales weaken, that signals pressure among shared customers and a cooler market for 3M’s materials. The question is whether vehicle-maker demand is supporting both businesses.
Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc earningsLECO
Lincoln Electric’s report will show purchasing by manufacturers and welding-product users, offering a demand clue for 3M’s metalworking and safety products.
Compare Lincoln Electric’s sales to manufacturers and welding-product users with sales in 3M’s Safety and Industrial segment. Growth at both would point to stronger manufacturing and fabrication activity, supporting demand for 3M’s abrasives and protective equipment. Weaker related sales at Lincoln Electric would suggest activity among these customers may be slowing, putting 3M’s related products under pressure too. The test is whether factory work is supporting both businesses.
PPG Industries, Inc. earningsPPG
PPG’s report will show coating sales to vehicle makers and repair shops, a clue to demand for 3M’s automotive bonding materials, abrasives and repair products.
Compare PPG’s coating sales to vehicle makers and repair shops with sales changes in 3M’s Transportation and Electronics and automotive aftermarket businesses. Strength in both points to production or repair activity lifting demand for different suppliers. Weaker PPG sales suggest shared customers may be buying less, leaving a softer market for 3M’s automotive materials and repair products too. The question is whether activity at vehicle makers and repair shops is supporting both companies’ related sales.
Avery Dennison Corp. earningsAVY
Avery Dennison’s report will show how its adhesive materials and graphic films are selling, helping distinguish shared demand from competitive pressure on 3M.
Compare Avery Dennison’s sales of related materials with 3M’s sales in industrial adhesives and commercial branding. If Avery Dennison grows while 3M’s comparable businesses lag, that points to possible competitive pressure in the same customer markets. If both rise or fall together, shared demand is a likelier explanation than one company taking business from the other. The test is whether 3M’s results track the market or trail a competitor.
Solventum Corporation earningsSOLV
Solventum’s report will offer clues to its ability to keep meeting service agreements with 3M, where a shortfall could leave 3M with extra costs.
Read Solventum’s business results alongside its performance of service agreements with 3M and any related reimbursements. Steady operations and fulfilled agreements would suggest the post-separation arrangements can continue, with less risk that 3M must absorb extra costs from disruption or nonperformance. Weaker operations or missed obligations would raise that risk. The conclusion is whether Solventum can keep providing the agreed services and reimbursements without leaving 3M to bear more of the cost.
RPM International, Inc. earningsRPM
RPM International’s report will show spending by industrial-maintenance and home-improvement customers, a clue to demand for overlapping 3M products.
Compare RPM’s industrial-maintenance and consumer-product sales with sales changes in 3M’s Safety and Industrial and Consumer segments. Growth in both companies’ related sales would point to firmer maintenance and home-improvement demand. If RPM grows while 3M’s comparable businesses lag, that suggests possible competitive pressure, though sales alone cannot show that customers switched suppliers. The test is whether demand is broadly improving or 3M’s related businesses are trailing a competitor.
