RPM International helps customers build, protect and repair buildings and industrial facilities. Most sales come from its construction products and performance coatings businesses, with construction products the largest segment. Brands such as Tremco, Stonhard and Carboline supply roofing, waterproofing, flooring and protective coatings. Contractors, distributors and facility owners buy these products and, in some cases, installation and repair services.
Its consumer business is also substantial. Rust-Oleum, Zinsser and DAP sell paints, surface-preparation products, sealants and other home-repair materials for professionals and do-it-yourself users. RPM receives revenue from retailers such as home improvement centers, hardware stores and mass merchandisers, as well as distributors. No single customer dominates company-wide sales, but the consumer business gets a significant share of its revenue from its largest customer.
Demand depends on construction, maintenance and home-improvement spending. Production and profitability also depend on the availability and cost of petroleum-derived materials, minerals, metals and packaging, and on whether RPM can pass cost increases to customers. Chemical, environmental and safety rules constrain product formulations and manufacturing; required permits and certifications can determine whether it may produce products or provide services.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
RPM’s results hinge on construction, maintenance and home-improvement demand; Sika and Akzo Nobel are also important competitors to watch beyond this list.
Sherwin-Williams competes with RPM for consumer spending on woodcare and specialty coatings, and for professional and industrial coatings customers. Watch its Consumer Brands business for competition facing RPM’s woodcare and DIY coatings.
PPG Industries competes with RPM to sell protective, industrial and architectural coatings to contractors, industrial customers and consumers. Its architectural coatings sales offer a comparison for RPM’s paints used in building decoration and maintenance.
Carlisle competes with RPM for commercial roofing and building-envelope projects, selling roofing and insulation mainly through representatives and distributors. Watch its roofing sales for new construction, repair and replacement—the work that also buys RPM’s roofing and waterproofing systems.
Masco’s BEHR paints compete with RPM’s Rust-Oleum and Zinsser for residential painting and home-improvement spending. Watch its Decorative Architectural Products sales, which normally strengthen in the second and third calendar quarters as repair and remodeling activity peaks.
Home Depot buys RPM’s Rust-Oleum and DAP products to resell to home-improvement shoppers. Its home-improvement sales provide a read on demand for RPM’s Consumer business.
Lowe’s buys RPM’s Rust-Oleum and DAP products for resale, serving the same DIY and professional repair demand that drives RPM’s Consumer business. Watch its sales to DIY shoppers and repair professionals for a view of that demand.
H.B. Fuller competes with RPM to supply construction customers with adhesives, sealants, roofing and building-envelope solutions. Its Building Adhesive Solutions business is the place to watch for roofing and building-envelope competition, rather than its broader industrial adhesives business.
Axalta competes with RPM for industrial coatings customers, but its automotive coatings business makes its overall results a less direct comparison. Its coatings and color-matching systems for auto body shops address a different market from RPM’s industrial flooring, corrosion-control and powder coatings.
Housing Starts (Sep)
RPM sells coatings, waterproofing, woodcare and home-repair products through home-improvement stores and other retailers, so new-home building activity can affect demand and sales to these customers.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More starts, permits or home sales than expected point to stronger building activity, which may lift retailer and supplier demand for RPM’s residential coatings, waterproofing and repair products.
If it comes in below expectations
Fewer starts, permits or home sales than expected point to weaker building activity, which may lead retailers and suppliers to order less of RPM’s residential coatings, waterproofing and repair products.
PPG Industries, Inc. earningsPPG
PPG’s report will show how its architectural coatings are selling for building decoration and maintenance, a market that overlaps with RPM’s related paints.
Look at PPG’s architectural coatings sales alongside what it says about volume and pricing. Sales growth with volume holding up would point to resilient demand for building decoration and maintenance, supporting the market for RPM’s related paints. Weaker sales or volume would signal pressure on that customer demand and a tighter market for RPM’s products.
The Sherwin-Williams Company earningsSHW
Sherwin-Williams’ Consumer Brands results will show how woodcare and DIY coatings are selling in the market where it competes with RPM’s Consumer business.
Look at sales and volume in Sherwin-Williams’ Consumer Brands business, especially woodcare and DIY coatings. If both hold up, spending on these products has support, but Sherwin-Williams is still competing for the same customers. If both weaken, shoppers are spending less in this category, pointing to softer demand for RPM’s Consumer business too.
Carlisle Companies, Inc. earningsCSL
Carlisle’s report will show how roofing sales are faring in the new-build, repair and replacement projects where it competes with RPM’s roofing systems.
Look at Carlisle’s roofing sales alongside what it says about new construction, repair and replacement. Stronger sales would show that projects are supporting demand for roofing products, leaving an active market for RPM’s roofing and waterproofing systems too. Weaker sales would signal project pressure and a cooler market for RPM to compete in.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
RPM sells roofing, waterproofing and repair products to construction customers, so interest rates that affect borrowing can change building activity and demand for those products.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is above expectations, pricier borrowing may curb construction financing and projects, reducing orders for RPM’s roofing, waterproofing and repair products.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is below expectations, cheaper borrowing may ease financing pressure and support construction projects, increasing demand for RPM’s roofing, waterproofing and repair products.
Home Depot, Inc. earningsHD
Home Depot’s report will show how home-improvement sales are faring at a retailer that resells RPM’s Rust-Oleum and DAP products.
Look at Home Depot’s comparable sales and demand for home-improvement products, alongside its comments on DIY shoppers and repair professionals. Stronger sales and demand would show that purchases through this retailer remain supported, giving RPM’s products a more active retail channel. Weaker results would point to pressure in that channel, but Home Depot’s figures alone cannot establish RPM’s own sales.
RPM International, Inc. earningsThis company
RPM’s report will show whether organic sales of its construction, industrial and consumer products can grow while pricing and cost savings keep gross margin steady.
Read organic sales growth by segment alongside consolidated gross margin. Growth across segments with a steady margin would show that customer demand and pricing or savings are keeping pace with costs. If acquisitions or currency account for much of sales growth while Consumer organic sales remain weak, or if the margin falls, reported growth is not showing broad demand or RPM is not yet offsetting cost pressure.
