Company

Company overview

ioneer Ltd’s main business is developing the Rhyolite Ridge mine and processing facility in Nevada. It owns the project but has not started commercial production or earned revenue from product sales. Its operations have been funded mainly by issuing shares, rather than by customers.

The planned business would extract lithium and boron and process them into compounds for sale. Future lithium carbonate buyers include Ford Motor Company, EcoPro Innovation and PPES, Toyota and Panasonic’s joint venture. Dalian Jinma Boron Technology is a contracted boric acid buyer, alongside other sales and distribution arrangements. These agreements depend on a final investment decision and meeting a supply start date; they are not current sales. Future revenue would come principally from lithium and boron compounds, making their prices central to the project’s economics.

Getting the project into production depends on securing construction funding. ioneer is seeking a partner to buy part of its project stake. It has closed a U.S. Department of Energy loan, but drawing funds requires a strategic partner’s equity commitment and other financing conditions, and further capital may still be needed. The project has federal mine-plan approval, which a district court upheld, but that ruling is under appeal. Development also remains subject to additional permits and environmental requirements.

ioneer Ltd’s prospects hinge on financing and building Rhyolite Ridge, fulfilling its conditional lithium supply agreements, and delivering boric acid to buyers including Dalian Jinma Boron Technology.

  • Lithium Americas Corp. and ioneer are both developing Nevada mines and processing plants to sell lithium carbonate into the battery supply chain, exposing both to lithium prices and project financing. Watch construction progress at Thacker Pass as a comparison for bringing ioneer’s Rhyolite Ridge into production.

  • 5E Advanced Materials, Inc. would compete with ioneer for industrial boric acid buyers as both develop U.S. production projects. Watch whether boric acid from 5E’s small-scale Fort Cady facility wins customer qualification and commercial agreements; it has not yet begun large-scale production.

  • Standard Lithium Ltd. and ioneer both need to turn U.S. development projects into commercial lithium-chemical supply, leaving both exposed to lithium demand and financing conditions. Standard Lithium plans to extract lithium from brine in Arkansas and Texas; its reliance on equity funding, rather than cash from producing properties, makes financing news the useful comparison.

  • Albemarle Corporation already sells lithium carbonate and other lithium chemicals to the battery markets ioneer plans to enter, making it an established competitor. Watch pricing and sales in Albemarle’s Energy Storage business for a view of the market awaiting ioneer, especially batteries for electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

  • Ford Motor Company, which sells Ford and Lincoln vehicles, has agreed to buy 7,000 tonnes of technical-grade lithium carbonate annually from ioneer for five years once production begins. That planned customer revenue still depends on a final investment decision and meeting the supply start date, so watch whether those conditions are fulfilled.

  • Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA (SQM) already produces and sells lithium into the market ioneer plans to enter with lithium carbonate, exposing both to global lithium demand and prices. Watch SQM’s lithium and derivatives revenue separately from its fertilizer and iodine businesses; lithium accounted for 50% of its revenue in 2025.

  • Lithium Argentina AG already sells lithium carbonate through agreements committing buyers to take its output, the commercial model ioneer plans to use. Its sales to Ganfeng and Bangchak, generally priced by market conditions or agreed mechanisms, offer a comparison for how lithium-market changes can reach contracted sales.

  • Elevra Lithium Limited and ioneer share exposure to lithium prices and North American battery-supply demand, but Elevra already produces lithium concentrate in Québec while ioneer is developing a Nevada lithium carbonate source. Watch output and potential expansion at Elevra’s North American Lithium operation as a measure of concentrate supply, not finished lithium carbonate.

  • Toyota Motor Corporation, primarily a vehicle seller, is an indirect prospective customer of ioneer through PPES, its joint venture with Panasonic. PPES has agreed to buy 4,000 tonnes of technical-grade lithium carbonate annually for five years once production begins, subject to a final investment decision and meeting the supply start date; watch fulfillment of that agreement rather than Toyota’s total vehicle sales.

  • Sigma Lithium Corporation’s Brazilian lithium-concentrate production and ioneer’s planned lithium carbonate production link both to lithium prices and battery-material demand, though they supply different products. Watch Sigma’s output and planned second production phase for changes in concentrate supply, rather than treating it as lithium carbonate production.

  • Atlas Lithium Corporation and ioneer are both developing future lithium supply, making their projects sensitive to lithium prices, battery-material demand and funding. Atlas plans to mine and process ore in Minas Gerais, Brazil, into concentrate for the battery supply chain, so its progress toward production offers a development-stage comparison—not evidence of current product sales.

  • Stardust Power Inc. plans to sell U.S.-produced lithium carbonate to battery manufacturers and automakers, overlapping the domestic market ioneer plans to supply. Its Oklahoma refinery is not yet producing or selling battery-grade lithium carbonate; watch whether it secures the lithium chloride feedstock needed to turn that competing capacity into supply.
