Ivanhoe Electric is a U.S. mineral exploration and development company that does not yet operate mines or earn revenue from its mineral projects. Its main development project is Santa Cruz Copper in Arizona. It plans to process ore there into copper cathode for sale to U.S. buyers, with prices linked to copper market benchmarks. These are planned sales, not an operating business, and no sales agreements have been signed.
The company uses its proprietary Typhoon surveying equipment to send electrical signals into the ground, then uses subsidiary CGI’s software to turn geophysical data into three-dimensional underground models that help identify exploration targets. CGI also processes data for outside mining, energy and water exploration customers, charging service fees and licensing its software. This data-processing business supplies the company’s current revenue.
CGI’s income does not cover the company’s operating needs. Ivanhoe Electric has funded operations mainly by issuing shares, and advancing Santa Cruz depends on additional financing and obtaining environmental, construction and mining permits. Its central task remains turning a development-stage copper project into a producing mine.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Ivanhoe Electric’s outlook rests on financing and developing Santa Cruz at attractive copper prices, with Maaden worth watching for its significant Saudi Arabian exploration joint venture.
Trekor Metals Limited shares Ivanhoe Electric’s exposure to copper prices and Arizona mine development, but already produces copper at Gibraltar while Ivanhoe Electric prepares Santa Cruz. Its Florence Copper ramp-up offers a nearby example of bringing a new copper operation into production.
Hudbay Minerals Inc.’s copper production and mine-development pipeline make it a useful comparison for Ivanhoe Electric’s copper projects. Hudbay already operates mines in Peru and Canada; progress at Copper World and Mason is the development news to watch.
Freeport-McMoRan Inc.’s copper-market and Arizona operating news matter to Ivanhoe Electric’s Santa Cruz development: copper sales supplied 75% of Freeport’s consolidated revenue in 2025. Watch operating updates from its large Morenci district in Arizona for a regional copper-mining comparison.
Western Copper and Gold Corporation shares Ivanhoe Electric’s need for attractive copper economics and successful mine development, rather than offering an operating-mine comparison. Its sole project, Casino in Canada’s Yukon, remains undeveloped and generates no revenue, while Ivanhoe Electric likewise has no mineral-project revenue.
BHP Group Limited connects to Ivanhoe Electric through both copper demand and a direct exploration alliance, which has a dedicated Ivanhoe Electric Typhoon unit. BHP sells copper as well as iron ore and coal; discoveries in the alliance are more directly relevant to Ivanhoe Electric than BHP’s other commodity results.
Southern Copper Corporation offers an operating comparison for the copper cathodes Ivanhoe Electric plans to sell from Santa Cruz. Southern Copper already earns revenue producing and processing metals, including extracting copper from solution and depositing it electrically into cathodes—the solvent extraction and electrowinning process planned for Santa Cruz.
Ero Copper Corp. shares Ivanhoe Electric’s copper-price exposure and offers a recent example of delivering a new copper mine. Ero sells copper concentrate from its Brazilian Caraíba and Tucumã operations; Tucumã reached commercial production on July 1, 2025, making its production progress worth watching alongside Santa Cruz’s development.
Teck Resources Limited’s copper sales respond to the same copper prices that determine the economics of Ivanhoe Electric’s Santa Cruz project. Teck sells copper and zinc; copper supplied 54% of its 2025 revenue excluding discontinued operations, so its copper revenue is the line to watch rather than its zinc business.
Rio Tinto plc’s substantial copper business benefits from the same copper prices that support Ivanhoe Electric’s Santa Cruz economics. Rio sells a broader mix of metals and minerals, so watch its copper division’s earnings rather than group results, which also include iron ore, aluminium and lithium.
Freeport-McMoran Inc. earningsFCX
Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci district is in Arizona, so its operating updates give Ivanhoe Electric a regional copper-mining comparison for Santa Cruz.
Look for Freeport-McMoRan’s operating updates on Morenci, especially copper production and whether operations are running smoothly. Steady output and operations would show that a large Arizona copper mine is producing reliably, a useful regional comparison for Santa Cruz. Disruptions or greater operating pressure would be a caution that mining in the area can face challenges. The projects differ, so this is not evidence of Santa Cruz’s own production or costs.
Southern Copper Corporation earningsSCCO
Southern Copper already produces copper cathodes using a process planned for Santa Cruz, giving Ivanhoe Electric an operating comparison for that part of the project.
Look for Southern Copper’s reported copper-cathode output and related operating costs; if it does not report those figures separately, its overall results cannot settle the question about this process. Steady output with controlled costs would show that this type of process can operate consistently in practice. Weaker output or rising costs would point to operating pressure. Santa Cruz has different ore and project conditions, so Ivanhoe Electric’s own project data will still be decisive.
Teck Resources Limited earningsTECK
Copper prices shape Santa Cruz’s future economics, and Teck’s copper sales and realized prices show whether the price backdrop is becoming more or less supportive for Ivanhoe Electric.
Read Teck’s copper sales volume alongside copper revenue, and check its reported realized price—the average price it actually received for copper. If realized prices rise and revenue strengthens relative to volume, copper prices offer more support for Santa Cruz’s future economics; if prices fall and revenue weakens relative to volume, they offer less. Teck also sells zinc, so focus on its copper business rather than treating total company revenue as a copper-price signal.
Ero Copper Corp. earningsERO
Ero Copper’s Tucumã mine has reached commercial production, and its report will show whether output holds up as the new operation ramps, offering Ivanhoe Electric a development comparison for Santa Cruz.
Read Tucumã’s production, ramp-up progress and costs together. Steady or rising output with costs under control would show a new copper mine turning development into saleable production. Output shortfalls, delays or rising costs would show the execution risks between building a mine and reaching steady production; Santa Cruz cannot be assumed to succeed from a development plan alone. The mines differ, so Ero’s results are a comparison, not Santa Cruz’s outcome.
Ivanhoe Electric Inc. earningsThis company
Ivanhoe Electric’s mining projects do not yet generate revenue, so this report will show whether its data-processing business is growing and helping shoulder exploration costs.
Read CGI’s data-processing revenue and gross profit together, then set them against the company’s cash used in operations. If both revenue and gross profit grow, customers are buying more services and that business can contribute more toward exploration. If revenue stalls or falls, or gross profit does not keep up with costs, Ivanhoe Electric still has to rely mainly on financing to fund spending. Its mining projects do not yet generate revenue, so these figures show whether the technology business is shouldering more of the load, not when a mine might open.
