Southern Copper takes ore from its mines in Peru and Mexico, concentrates the metal, and processes much of it through its own smelters and refineries. It sells copper concentrate, refined copper and copper rod. Copper supplies most of its revenue; sales of recovered metals such as molybdenum and silver, along with zinc, add smaller revenue streams.
Customers pay mainly under annual or longer-term contracts, with the company favoring end users over trading companies and spot-market buyers. These contracts do not lock in metal prices: pricing follows market quotations for the agreed period, with adjustments for processing, product quality, freight and negotiated terms. Concentrates sell at a discount because buyers must still smelt and refine them, while refined copper and rod command premiums.
Earnings therefore depend heavily on copper prices and the cost of keeping the mines producing. Mining consumes reserves, so the company must keep investing in exploration, development and facilities. Energy and water are essential; most electricity for its Mexican mining complexes comes from Mexico Generadora de Energia, a Grupo Mexico subsidiary. Its right to mine also depends on government concessions in Peru and Mexico, which can be terminated if it fails to meet their obligations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper earn roughly three-quarters of their revenue from selling copper, so copper prices move both businesses; both also earn substantial revenue from molybdenum recovered alongside copper. Watch Freeport’s copper and molybdenum revenue rather than its gold business for the closer comparison.
BHP Group and Southern Copper both produce and sell copper at large scale, making copper prices a shared earnings driver; copper contributed more than half of BHP’s earnings in FY2026. BHP’s copper results are the relevant comparison, rather than its iron ore and coal sales.
Teck Resources shares Southern Copper’s exposure to copper and zinc prices, and both operate Peruvian mines that produce copper with molybdenum by-products. Teck’s news from Antamina, its copper, zinc and molybdenum mine in Peru, is worth watching for conditions affecting Southern Copper’s Peruvian operations.
Hudbay Minerals and Southern Copper both operate copper mines in Peru and recover molybdenum, silver and other by-products, giving them shared exposure to copper prices and Peruvian mining conditions. Watch Hudbay’s Constancia mine news for a local comparison, rather than its Canadian operations.
Ero Copper sells copper concentrate from Brazil into the same global market as Southern Copper’s concentrate operations, so copper prices and concentrate demand matter to both. Watch sales from Caraíba and Tucumã: this material still needs smelting and refining, unlike Southern Copper’s refined copper and rod.
The supplied comparison for Trekor Metals Limited concerns Taseko’s Gibraltar mine, whose copper and molybdenum output matches Southern Copper’s main metal and largest by-product revenue source. Gibraltar’s copper and molybdenum results are the relevant comparison, but the supplied material does not establish that Trekor and Taseko are the same company.
Rio Tinto and Southern Copper are major copper producers, so copper prices matter to both, but Rio’s larger iron ore business makes its overall results a less direct comparison. Watch Rio’s copper segment rather than its total earnings for a clearer read on the business Southern Copper depends on.
Buenaventura and Southern Copper share exposure to copper and silver prices and Peruvian mining conditions, and also explore together under joint-venture agreements. Buenaventura sells metals and concentrates to smelters and traders; news on its exploration work with Southern Copper is the more direct link to watch.
Southern Copper Corporation earningsThis company
Southern Copper earns mainly by selling copper, and this report will show whether copper sales and prices bring in enough to outpace mining and processing costs.
Read copper sales and prices alongside cash cost per pound; by-product revenue reduces the company’s reported cash cost after by-products. Stronger sales or prices with controlled costs would show Southern Copper is turning market gains into its own profit. Weaker sales or prices, or costs rising faster, would show pressure on that path.
Freeport-McMoran Inc. earningsFCX
Freeport-McMoRan’s report will show how its copper and molybdenum sales are faring, offering a read on the markets Southern Copper depends on for those metals.
Focus on Freeport-McMoRan’s copper and molybdenum sales revenue, not its gold business; revenue also reflects volume, not just price. Stronger revenue in those metals would suggest firmer support in markets the companies share, while weaker revenue would suggest less support—not that Southern Copper’s own volumes or costs moved the same way.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Southern Copper’s Fed-rate exposure is mainly through interest earned on its cash and short-term investments, while its fixed-rate debt limits changes in interest paid.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates could increase what Southern Copper earns on cash and short-term investments, while its fixed-rate debt limits any rise in interest paid.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates could reduce interest earned on Southern Copper’s cash and short-term investments, while its fixed-rate debt limits any decline in interest paid.
Compania de Minas Buenaventura S.A. earningsBVN
If Buenaventura reports on exploration it conducts with Southern Copper, its update can show whether that work is advancing toward a possible future resource.
Look for a specific update on exploration undertaken jointly by the two companies. Reported progress would suggest the work could add to Southern Copper’s future resource options; stalled work or no verifiable progress would mean there is no basis to count it as added reserves or production.
Teck Resources Limited earningsTECK
Teck’s report on copper, zinc and molybdenum production at Peru’s Antamina mine offers a peer comparison for Southern Copper’s Peruvian operations.
Read Antamina’s output alongside its unit costs. Steady output with contained costs would point to limited operating pressure at that Peruvian mine; weaker output or higher costs would flag pressure there and merit attention to Southern Copper’s Peru operations. The mines differ, so Teck’s result alone cannot establish that Southern Copper has the same issue.
Ero Copper Corp. earningsERO
Ero Copper’s report will show how its copper concentrate is selling, offering a market check for the concentrate Southern Copper sells for further processing.
Look at Ero’s concentrate sales volume and, if disclosed, whether the terms buyers accept have changed. Higher sales or more favorable terms would suggest support for concentrate demand; lower sales or less favorable terms would point to pressure on this product, not prove Southern Copper’s own concentrate prices or volumes moved by the same amount.
