Company

Company overview

CYBIN INC., since renamed Helus Pharma Inc., is developing potential treatments for psychiatric and neurological conditions. It modifies compounds to activate selected serotonin receptors and tests the resulting drug candidates in clinical trials. Its programs include HLP003 for potential use alongside other treatment for major depressive disorder and HLP004 for generalized anxiety disorder. Neither is an approved medicine.

Helus Pharma has no revenue and funds its research primarily through public financing. It intends to sell medicines, alone or with partners, if development succeeds. Those sales would depend on doctors prescribing the products and insurers covering treatment or patients paying themselves. The company relies on third parties for much of its clinical development and drug manufacturing.

Commercial sales require clinical evidence of safety and efficacy and regulatory approval. Controlled-substance laws also restrict research, production and supply. In the United States, HLP003 and HLP004 cannot be marketed unless FDA approval is followed by the necessary DEA scheduling or rescheduling.

Helus Pharma's prospects hinge on depression and anxiety trial results and regulatory acceptance; also watch nonprofit Usona Institute, which is developing Phase 3 psilocybin for depression and could offer treatment at cost or free.

  • COMPASS Pathways' COMP360 for treatment-resistant depression makes its trial results and route to market relevant to Helus Pharma's HLP003 for major depressive disorder. Watch its progress toward approval and selling the psilocybin treatment to U.S. healthcare providers and clinic networks.

  • Definium Therapeutics' Phase 3 lysergide treatment DT120 ODT targets both generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder, overlapping Helus Pharma's HLP004 and HLP003. Watch its trial results and U.S. controlled-substance rescheduling: FDA approval alone would not allow it to be prescribed.

  • GH Research develops tryptamine-based mental-health treatments that would compete with Helus Pharma's depression therapies. Watch approval progress for GH001 and GH002 and its plans to sell to healthcare providers, clinic networks and third-party payors in the United States and major European markets.

  • Incannex Healthcare's psychedelic-assisted treatments for generalized anxiety disorder would compete with Helus Pharma's HLP004; Incannex has no marketed products yet. Watch trial progress and drug-supply updates, since manufacturing problems or DEA limits on controlled substances could delay its trials.

  • Helus Pharma depends on Thermo Fisher Scientific to manufacture HLP003 drug substance and capsules in the United States for Phase 3 trials and planned commercialization. Watch HLP003 production updates from its Florence, South Carolina, and Cincinnati, Ohio, sites rather than Thermo Fisher's broad sales to laboratories and drugmakers.

  • Axsome Therapeutics already sells AUVELITY for major depressive disorder, an established alternative in the market Helus Pharma hopes to enter with HLP003. Watch AUVELITY sales specifically, rather than Axsome's combined revenue from depression, sleepiness and migraine medicines.

  • Alto Neuroscience's clinical-stage treatments for major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression would compete for patients with Helus Pharma's depression program. Watch its depression trial data, including whether its biomarkers identify patients likely to respond to treatment.

  • Xenon Pharmaceuticals' Phase 3 azetukalner program targets the same major depressive disorder market as Helus Pharma's HLP003 through a different mechanism. Watch its depression trial results, not product sales: azetukalner remains investigational.
