Company overview

Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc is developing azetukalner for epilepsy, major depressive disorder and bipolar depression in Phase 3 clinical trials. This is its lead drug candidate, not a marketed medicine: Xenon has no drugs approved for sale and has earned no product-sales revenue. Its future business depends heavily on bringing azetukalner through development, regulatory approval and commercialization.

Neurocrine Biosciences is a key paying partner. Xenon licenses it rights to certain other drug candidates, giving Neurocrine exclusive responsibility for their further development and commercialization. The agreement provides for payments when development, regulatory or sales milestones are reached, and royalties on future sales. These payments depend on Neurocrine advancing the programs; they are not assured. The agreement also restricts Xenon from independently pursuing certain drugs that inhibit the Nav1.2 and Nav1.6 sodium channels, subject to its terms and exceptions.

Xenon has funded its operations mainly by issuing equity, alongside collaboration funding and debt financing. Drug sales remain a potential future source of income, contingent on successful development and approval.

Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc's results hinge on azetukalner's clinical and regulatory success in epilepsy and depression, while UCB and SK Life Science are important epilepsy competitors missing from this list.

  • Biohaven Ltd. offers a close clinical benchmark for Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc: both develop epilepsy treatments that act on Kv7 ion channels, and neither is selling these investigational treatments. Watch Biohaven's epilepsy trial results when judging Xenon's competitive position.

  • Praxis Precision Medicines, Inc. competes with Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc in developing ion-channel treatments for common epilepsies and treatments for genetically defined seizure disorders. Its clinical progress in these patient groups is the comparison to watch; Praxis has not generated product-sales revenue.

  • Neurocrine Biosciences Inc pays Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc for progress on sodium-channel compounds it licenses and develops, but also develops competing depression treatments. NBI-921355's entry into a Phase 1 study in healthy adults in February 2025 triggered a milestone that supplied Xenon's $7.5 million of collaboration revenue for 2025.

  • Rapport Therapeutics, Inc. is a potential rival to Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc's anti-seizure programs through its own epilepsy drug development. Watch its epilepsy candidates' clinical progress rather than sales: Rapport does not expect product-sales revenue before completing development and gaining approval.

  • Ovid Therapeutics Inc. names Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc as a direct competitor to OV329, its program for drug-resistant focal-onset seizures. OV329's progress in patients whose seizures resist existing drugs is the relevant competitive signal for Xenon's epilepsy development.

  • Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. already sells the epilepsy medicines Trokendi XR and Oxtellar XR, which would compete with Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc's epilepsy candidates if approved. Those two products, rather than Supernus's broader drug portfolio, are the relevant sales lines to watch.

  • Axsome Therapeutics, Inc already sells AUVELITY in the U.S. for major depressive disorder, the same condition Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc is targeting with investigational azetukalner. AUVELITY's sales are the relevant competitive measure, not Axsome's combined revenue from its three marketed drugs.

  • Alto Neuroscience Inc. competes with Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc across both major depressive disorder and bipolar depression, with both companies developing treatments rather than selling these candidates. Watch Alto's clinical results in those two patient groups as benchmarks for azetukalner.

  • Neumora Therapeutics, Inc. is developing potential rivals to Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc in both major depressive disorder and bipolar depression. Its clinical progress in those conditions matters more for this comparison than revenue: Neumora had no approved products or product-sales revenue through December 31, 2025.

  • Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. competes with Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc's own and partnered epilepsy programs through marketed Epidiolex and epilepsy drugs in development. Epidiolex's use for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex is the relevant part of Jazz's business to watch.

  • Stoke Therapeutics, Inc.'s treatments targeting SCN1A in Dravet syndrome overlap Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc's work in genetic epilepsies. Watch clinical progress for zorevunersen, which Stoke leads in development with Biogen, as a benchmark in this patient group.

  • Definium Therapeutics, Inc. and Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc both have Phase 3 programs seeking to treat major depressive disorder: Definium's lysergide treatment DT120 ODT and Xenon's azetukalner. DT120 ODT's depression trial results provide a late-stage competitive benchmark, though U.S. prescribing would also require controlled-substance rescheduling after FDA approval.

  • COMPASS Pathways Plc's investigational psilocybin treatment COMP360 targets treatment-resistant depression, overlapping the depression market Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc seeks to enter with azetukalner. Watch COMP360's results specifically in treatment-resistant patients, rather than treating them as evidence for all depression patients.
