Company

Company overview

Flutter Entertainment serves customers who bet on sports and play casino games, mainly online, through brands including FanDuel, Paddy Power, Sisal and PokerStars. Sports betting brings in the most revenue, with online gaming close behind. For sports bets, Flutter sets fixed odds designed to leave a margin over many events; its revenue is the stakes received less winnings paid and promotional costs. In casino games, customers play against the house, and Flutter earns the difference between bets and payouts.

PokerStars poker and Betfair betting exchanges work differently: customers play or bet against one another, and Flutter takes a commission rather than generally bearing the outcome risk. These products need enough active players to offer attractive games and betting opportunities. Sportsbook revenue also depends on the sporting calendar and match results, while casino gaming is less tied to sports schedules.

The U.S. is a major market, served principally through FanDuel. Access depends on what each jurisdiction permits and on maintaining licenses or required market-access partnerships. Boyd Gaming, for example, provides FanDuel with online sports-betting access in several U.S. states. Local rules also limit the product range: Sportsbet offers online sports betting in Australia, but Flutter does not offer its other real-money online gaming products there.

Red flags

Know what’s buried in FLUT’s filings before you buy

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

Beyond this list, watch privately held Bet365: its competition, international gambling regulation and sports outcomes also shape Flutter’s results.

  • DraftKings vies with Flutter’s FanDuel for U.S. customers who pay to bet on sports, play online casino games and enter daily fantasy contests. Watch its sportsbook revenue margin: like Flutter, it keeps bets less winnings, so sports outcomes can move near-term results.

  • Rush Street Interactive, Inc. competes with Flutter for players spending on online casino games and sports bets through its apps and websites. Its customer spending and retention show how effectively its platform keeps those players returning.

  • MGM competes with Flutter for online bettors through BetMGM in North America and LeoVegas internationally. Watch those businesses rather than MGM’s overall resort revenue: its Las Vegas Strip resorts typically earn more than half their net revenue from non-gaming customers.

  • PENN Entertainment competes with Flutter’s FanDuel for customers spending on digital sports betting and online casino games. Watch its efforts to bring retail casino customers and PENN Play members onto its digital platform, rather than treating hotel and dining revenue as a measure of online competition.

  • Flutter’s brands buy sports data and betting content from Sportradar Group AG, making it a supplier rather than a rival for bettors. Its betting services benefit as sportsbook activity expands.

  • Flutter’s FanDuel buys official sports data and betting video from Genius Sports Limited. That supplier’s sportsbook services benefit from growing wagering activity, tying its business to the betting activity Flutter earns revenue from.

  • Flutter depends on Boyd Gaming for FanDuel’s online sportsbook market access in six states, while Boyd’s online casino brands also compete for players’ spending. Watch the partnership’s continuity: Flutter says failure to maintain and manage it could hurt its results.
