Company

Company overview

Financial Institutions Inc’s business centers on Five Star Bank, which serves individuals, businesses and municipalities mainly in Western and Central New York. The bank uses customer deposits to fund loans and securities investments. Borrowers and securities issuers pay interest; the bank keeps what remains after paying interest on deposits and other funding. This net interest income is its main source of earnings.

Business loans and commercial property mortgages make up most of its lending, with commercial property mortgages the largest category. The business therefore depends heavily on local business conditions, borrowers’ income and real estate collateral. Local-government deposits are an important funding source. Keeping those deposits, and how quickly funding costs change relative to loan and investment yields, matters to earnings.

The much smaller Courier Capital business manages investments and provides wealth advice to individuals and institutional clients, earning advisory fees largely tied to assets under management. The parent company relies substantially on dividends from Five Star Bank to meet its own obligations; federal and state laws limit how much the bank can distribute.

  • Community Financial System, Inc.’s Community Bank competes with Financial Institutions Inc’s Five Star Bank for individuals’ and businesses’ deposits and loans across Upstate New York. Watch its success in building local banking relationships—the same customers fund Five Star’s lending and pay interest on its loans.

  • Northwest Bancshares, Inc’s Northwest Bank directly competes with Five Star Bank for personal and business deposits and loans in Western New York. Its deposit pricing is worth watching for Financial Institutions Inc: both banks use customer deposits to fund loans and earn interest from borrowers.

  • CNB Financial Corp/PA competes for the Western New York businesses that borrow from and deposit money with Financial Institutions Inc’s Five Star Bank through CNB Bank’s Bank on Buffalo division.

  • OceanFirst Financial Corp and Financial Institutions Inc’s Five Star Bank share exposure to commercial property borrowers and changing loan rates: at year-end 2025, roughly half of each bank’s loans were in commercial real estate, with substantial adjustable-rate lending. Watch OceanFirst’s multifamily and construction loan performance for a comparison with Five Star’s commercial mortgage book.

  • First Mid Bancshares, Inc. offers a comparison for Financial Institutions Inc’s reliance on banking and commercial property borrowers: both have sizable commercial real estate loan books. Watch First Mid’s lending revenue, which supplied about 74% of its total revenue in 2025, rather than its insurance or wealth-management business.

  • Independent Bank Corp. and Financial Institutions Inc both depend heavily on income from borrowers: loans made up about four-fifths of each company’s average interest-earning assets in 2025. Watch Independent Bank’s loan interest and fees, which supplied 75.7% of its 2025 revenue, as a comparison for Five Star Bank’s lending income.

  • Camden National Corporation is a similarly sized comparison for Financial Institutions Inc: both run branch-led banks in the Northeastern US that take deposits and lend to businesses, consumers and municipalities. Watch Camden’s deposit gathering and lending to those customers, rather than treating its acquisition-driven asset growth as a like-for-like measure.
