Company

Company overview

Independent Bank Corp. is a bank holding company whose subsidiary, Independent Bank, provides loans and deposit accounts to individuals and businesses. Its lending is concentrated in Michigan and includes commercial and mortgage loans. Deposits supply most of its funding, which it uses to make loans and hold investments. Borrowers’ interest and loan fees account for most revenue; the spread between interest earned and funding costs is its main source of earnings.

Smaller revenue sources include deposit-account fees, income from debit-card payments through networks such as MasterCard and Accel, and gains from selling mortgage loans rather than keeping them on its books.

The business depends on retaining deposits, borrowers repaying their loans, and the relationship between lending rates and funding costs. Banking regulation restricts its operations and securities activities. The parent company receives substantially all its cash flow through dividends or capital returned by the bank, and federal and state rules limit those distributions.

  • First Mid Bancshares, Inc. offers a comparison for Independent Bank Corp.: both are Midwestern community banks that earn much of their revenue from borrowers and have meaningful exposure to commercial real estate loans.

  • German American Bancorp and Independent Bank Corp. face similar Midwestern banking conditions: both use local customer deposits to make commercial and home loans, and sell mortgages to other investors. German American’s mortgage sales offer a comparison for the demand behind Independent’s mortgage-sale income.

  • Byline Bancorp, Inc. offers a local-business lending comparison for Independent Bank Corp.: its Chicago-area bank and Independent’s Michigan bank both depend on business borrowers, commercial real estate and customer deposits. Watch Byline’s ability to gather low-cost deposits through local relationships, a funding issue that also matters to Independent.

  • Northwest Bancshares, Inc. offers a nearby comparison for Independent Bank Corp. through its Ohio and Indiana operations; both use customer deposits to fund home and business loans. Watch the interest Northwest pays on deposits alongside its loan interest income to compare the lending economics behind Independent’s main earnings source.

  • First Financial Corporation offers a nearby regional comparison for Independent Bank Corp. through its Indiana and Illinois markets: both lend to businesses, homebuyers and consumers. Its lending trends across those customer groups provide a comparison for demand in Independent’s Michigan market, rather than evidence of direct rivalry.
