Company

Company overview

Eastman Chemical Company supplies manufacturers with plastics, films and additives that give finished products specific properties. Advanced Materials and Additives & Functional Products together generate most of its sales. Examples include Tritan plastics for food-contact uses and Saflex Q Series materials for acoustic applications in cars and buildings. Eastman works with customers on product applications and formulations, then earns revenue from selling them the materials, primarily through its own global sales organization.

Its integrated factories also make chemical ingredients for its specialty businesses, and Chemical Intermediates sells production beyond those internal needs to other manufacturers. A separate Fibers business supplies materials primarily for cigarette filters, as well as textile fibers such as Naia. Eastman does not depend on one customer overall, but a small group of large customers accounts for most Fibers sales.

Demand depends partly on consumer spending on goods, cars and construction, while chemical intermediates are particularly sensitive to industry supply and demand. Raw-material and energy prices also affect production costs. Its factories must meet health, safety and environmental requirements, including limits on emissions, discharges and hazardous-waste handling; violations can restrict or stop operations.

Eastman’s results hinge on specialty-material demand, chemical pricing and acetate-tow customer inventories; BASF is an important competitor to watch that this list omits.

  • Celanese competes with Eastman in acetyl chemicals and specialty polymers sold to automotive, construction, medical and consumer-product manufacturers. Its Acetyl Chain results and engineered-materials demand offer a read on the chemical supply balance and manufacturing demand that also affect Eastman.

  • Dow competes with Eastman for manufacturing customers buying coatings additives, specialty fluids and industrial chemical materials. Watch demand from coatings and construction customers in Dow’s Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure business for clues to conditions facing Eastman’s additives sales.

  • Huntsman competes with Eastman in care additives and amine-based chemicals, and both sell performance materials to industrial and building-product manufacturers. Huntsman’s amines business is a useful place to watch demand from those customers rather than relying on its total sales.

  • AdvanSix Inc. directly competes with Eastman in the U.S. for sales of alkyl-amines, ingredients customers use in coatings, agriculture, water treatment and other formulations. Watch its alkyl-amine pricing and sales to those customers for a focused view of competition facing Eastman’s functional amines.

  • LyondellBasell and Eastman both sell acetyl chemicals, other chemical ingredients and polymers to manufacturers, so manufacturing demand and industry supply balances affect both companies’ margins. LyondellBasell’s acetyl and other intermediate-chemical results offer a read on the cycle facing Eastman’s Chemical Intermediates business.

  • XPEL, Inc. competes directly with Eastman’s LLumar and Suntek brands in automotive paint-protection films and also sells automotive window films, tying both to car owners’ aftermarket spending. Watch XPEL’s protection-film and automotive window-film sales for a focused view of demand facing Eastman’s performance films.

  • Ashland and Eastman both sell additives and specialty ingredients that improve products made by coatings, construction and personal-care formulators. Demand for Ashland’s coatings additives and personal-care ingredients offers a view of customer spending that also matters to Eastman’s Additives & Functional Products business.

  • Westlake Corporation shares Eastman’s exposure to construction, durable-goods demand and chemical capacity cycles through its building products and integrated plastics businesses. Its building-product sales show construction demand, while its industrial-materials margins provide a separate view of chemical supply pressures relevant to Eastman.

  • Avient Corporation and Eastman both depend on manufacturers’ demand for higher-performance plastics, but Avient buys polymers and modifies them for specific uses while Eastman makes specialty plastics. Watch Avient’s Specialty Engineered Materials sales for a read on customers’ appetite for those higher-performance products.
