Company

Company overview

Ashland supplies manufacturers with ingredients that help medicines, personal-care products and industrial materials work as intended. Drugmakers buy its ingredients to bind tablets, control drug release and apply coatings; consumer-product formulators use them to adjust texture, stability and other properties. Paint and construction-material manufacturers buy additives that control thickness and improve performance. These businesses generate most of Ashland’s sales, with pharmaceutical and nutrition ingredients the largest segment. A smaller business sells chemical intermediates and supplies raw materials to Ashland’s other operations.

Cellulose-based materials and polyvinylpyrrolidone polymers, known as PVP, together account for most revenue across these markets. Sales are not concentrated in a single dominant customer.

The business depends on customers continuing to use Ashland’s materials in their formulations and on developing ingredients that meet changing requirements. Its ability to pass raw-material and energy cost increases on to customers also matters. Products and operations must comply with applicable food, drug, chemical and environmental rules, including FDA requirements and Europe’s REACH chemical regulation.

Ashland’s results hinge chiefly on pharmaceutical and personal-care ingredient demand and cellulosics/PVP pricing, making BASF a competitor to watch even though it is absent from this list.

  • Dow competes with Ashland for construction-chemical business and also supplies ingredients that improve coatings and consumer-product formulations. Watch Dow’s coatings and construction business for clues to demand in markets served by Ashland’s additives.

  • Innospec Inc. and Ashland compete to supply ingredients for personal-care formulations and chemicals used in drilling, well completion and oil production, giving them overlapping customer demand.

  • Eastman Chemical Company competes with Ashland for coatings and other formulation customers, selling additives that improve product performance and cellulose-based materials.

  • Stepan Co. competes with Ashland to supply household-cleaning, personal-care and industrial-product manufacturers with surfactants and other formulation ingredients.

  • PPG Industries’ paint production reflects demand for the thickeners and performance additives Ashland sells to paint manufacturers; PPG sells coatings to contractors, consumers and industrial customers. Watch its architectural and industrial coatings business for clues to Ashland’s coatings-additive demand, rather than evidence of a direct supply relationship.

  • Ashland buys cosmetic ingredients from United-Guardian, Inc. and resells them to cosmetic and personal-care manufacturers, acting as its exclusive distributor in many territories. Sales to Ashland accounted for approximately 22% of United-Guardian’s total sales in 2025, making that sales line a direct window into Ashland’s purchases from this supplier.
