Company

Company overview

United-Guardian earns the largest share of its sales from pharmaceuticals. Its main drug, Renacidin, and its other drug, Clorpactin, are sold primarily to three national drug wholesalers, which buy them for resale to hospitals, pharmacies and other healthcare buyers. Renacidin is made by an outside contract manufacturer, so the company depends on that supplier to fill orders; its other marketed products are made at its own New York facility.

The company also supplies cosmetic and personal-care manufacturers with ingredients such as Lubrajel, a water-based moisturizing and lubricating gel. Distributors buy these ingredients outright and handle most marketing and resale. Ashland Specialty Ingredients is the largest distributor and accounts for a substantial share of company sales, making its orders important to the business. United-Guardian continues working with Ashland while negotiating a replacement for their expired distribution agreement.

Medical lubricants provide another source of revenue. United-Guardian sells water-based gels directly to medical-product manufacturers and their contract manufacturers for use in catheters and other devices. The makers of the finished products are responsible for obtaining their regulatory approvals; United-Guardian must manufacture its lubricants under current good manufacturing practices, and its facility is subject to FDA oversight.

United-Guardian’s results hinge not primarily on the consumer beauty companies shown here, but also on reliable contract manufacturing and wholesaler demand for Renacidin, its largest pharmaceutical product.

  • United-Guardian depends on Ashland’s purchases of its cosmetic ingredients for resale to beauty and personal-care manufacturers: Ashland also sells its own personal-care ingredients to formulators, and its distribution business accounted for 22% of United-Guardian’s 2025 sales. Watch Ashland’s inventory and Asian demand for United-Guardian’s products—Ashland reported overstocking and weaker demand there, which drove lower purchases and most of United-Guardian’s 2025 cosmetic-ingredient sales decline.

Ashland’s report will show whether Asian demand and inventory are changing its sales of personal-care ingredients to formulators—and, in turn, its purchases of cosmetic ingredients from United-Guardian.
