Company

Company overview

Center Bancorp Inc operates mainly through ConnectOne Bank, serving small and mid-sized businesses, local professionals and individuals in metropolitan New York and parts of Florida. The bank uses customer deposits as its main funding source for loans and investment securities. Most revenue comes from the interest it collects after deducting interest paid on deposits and borrowings; banking services and loan origination, sales and servicing also generate fees.

Commercial real estate accounts for most of its loans, and much of its property collateral is in New York and New Jersey. Repayment therefore depends heavily on local property development, leasing and rental income. The bank also depends on retaining deposits and keeping funding costs below the yields on its loans and securities.

Regulators may require more capital or reduced commercial real estate exposure because of this concentration. The parent company relies on cash from the bank, whose dividend payments are limited by capital requirements and other regulatory restrictions.

  • Provident Financial Services competes with ConnectOne for deposits and loans to businesses and commercial property owners in overlapping New Jersey and New York communities. Watch Provident’s deposit gathering and business and commercial property lending—the same activities that fund and drive ConnectOne’s banking business.

  • Orange County Bancorp, through Orange Bank & Trust, competes with ConnectOne for business and professional clients in the Hudson Valley and New York metropolitan area, offering deposit accounts, loans and cash-management services. Its ability to attract business customers in Orange, Westchester, Rockland and Bronx counties is worth watching for competition facing ConnectOne.

  • Hope Bancorp’s Bank of Hope competes with ConnectOne for some of the same depositors and business and commercial property borrowers in New York and New Jersey. Watch its lending and deposit activity in those two states, rather than its nationwide totals, for the overlap with ConnectOne.

  • Cathay General Bancorp overlaps with ConnectOne in New York, where both provide commercial property loans and business banking to professionals and small and medium-sized companies.

  • CUSTOMERS BANCORP INC and ConnectOne both use customer deposits to fund business and commercial property loans, so loan growth and the cost of those deposits matter to both. Watch Customers’ cubiX business-payments platform: the company says it can attract low-cost deposits, a funding advantage relevant to ConnectOne’s deposit-funded model.

  • Citizens Financial Group competes with ConnectOne for deposits and small-business and middle-market banking clients in New York and New Jersey, although Citizens operates a much broader banking business.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

For ConnectOne Bank, the Fed’s rate decision signals how the cost of loans and securities that reprice, and the interest it pays on deposits and borrowings, may change net interest income—the interest earned minus interest paid.
