Cathay General Bancorp is the holding company for Cathay Bank, which serves individuals, professionals and small-to-medium-sized businesses, mainly in California markets with Chinese-American communities. The bank gathers deposits from local customers and lends to businesses, commercial property borrowers and homebuyers. Borrowers pay interest, which supplies most of its income after the bank pays interest on deposits and other funding. Customers also pay fees for banking and wealth management services, a smaller income source.
Commercial property and business loans are a significant part of the loan portfolio. Repayment depends on borrowers’ businesses and, for income-producing properties, rents and successful property operations. This ties the bank closely to California’s economy and property values. Earnings also depend on retaining deposits at a cost that leaves room between funding costs and loan income.
The holding company receives substantially all of its cash flow through dividends from Cathay Bank. Banking law and regulatory capital requirements restrict how much the bank can pass upstream.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
East West Bank competes with Cathay for Asian-American consumers’ and businesses’ deposits, commercial loans and international banking in California. Watch its use of Asian business relationships to win California customers: that is a concrete source of competition for Cathay.
Hope Bancorp’s Bank of Hope competes with Cathay for multi-ethnic business customers in California and other overlapping U.S. markets, taking deposits and providing commercial property loans, small-business financing through SBA programs and trade financing. Its commercial property and SBA lending are the businesses to watch for competition with Cathay.
CVB Financial’s Citizens Business Bank competes with Cathay for California business customers who need loans and a bank for their deposits.
PCB Bancorp’s PCB Bank competes with Cathay for small-business loans and deposits in Southern California and overlapping New York, New Jersey and Texas markets. Its loan and deposit pricing is worth watching because PCB identifies both as factors in winning customers.
OP Bancorp’s Open Bank competes with Cathay for Southern California small-business deposits, commercial real estate loans and financing through SBA small-business programs. Watch its relationship-based lending to local businesses and their owners, the customers both banks seek.
Enterprise Financial Services Corporation’s Enterprise Bank & Trust competes with Cathay for California business deposits and commercial, real estate and SBA small-business lending relationships. Watch deposits from its business and professional clients: Enterprise relies primarily on customer deposits to fund loan growth.
Community West Bancshares’ Community West Bank competes with Cathay for California businesses’ deposits and commercial loans.
Sierra Bancorp’s Bank of the Sierra competes with Cathay for California deposits and loans secured by real estate. Sierra has greater exposure to short-term financing for mortgage lenders—mortgage warehouse lending—so that business makes it a less direct comparison for Cathay.
East-West Bancorp Inc earningsEWBC
East West Bancorp’s report will show how it gathers deposits and makes commercial loans, offering a signal of how strongly it competes with Cathay for California business customers.
Compare East West’s deposit growth and deposit costs with its commercial loan growth. Growing deposits and loans without a marked rise in deposit costs would show it can fund lending while competing for business customers; slower deposits, higher costs or weaker lending would point to more constraints. Company-wide figures may not isolate California or prove that customers left Cathay for East West: they show the rival’s position, not Cathay’s own results.
Cathay General Bancorp earningsThis company
Cathay General Bancorp earns mainly from interest on loans and investments after paying for deposits and other funding, so this report shows whether that spread is holding up and credit losses are eating into it.
Read net interest margin alongside deposit costs and loan yields. Net interest margin is net interest income as a share of interest-earning assets: if it holds steady, Cathay is keeping funding costs from consuming too much of what its loans and investments earn; if it falls, those costs are squeezing the spread. Then check the provision for credit losses against net charge-offs. Rising losses, especially alongside worsening commercial real estate risks, mean borrower stress is consuming more income; contained losses leave more of the spread to support profit.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Cathay Bank earns interest on loans and investments and pays interest on deposits and borrowings, so Fed rate decisions can change both sides of the spread that drives its net interest income.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates may lift interest earned on loans and investments as they reprice, but if deposit and borrowing costs rise sooner or faster, the spread and Cathay Bank’s net interest income may narrow; higher borrowing costs may also strain borrowers’ repayments.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates may reduce interest earned as loans and investments reprice, but if deposit and borrowing costs fall sooner or faster, Cathay Bank’s spread and net interest income may improve; borrowers may also find repayment easier.
Non Farm Payrolls (Oct)
The jobs report tracks hiring and employment, which affect whether Cathay Bank’s local borrowers—from individuals to small businesses with commercial property and construction loans—can repay and sustain the cash flows behind their loans.
If hiring is strong, Cathay Bank’s local borrowers may have more income and business activity to support repayment. If hiring weakens, individuals and small businesses may have less capacity to pay, putting loan performance and property cash flows at risk.
