Company overview

East-West Bancorp operates through East West Bank, serving individuals and businesses with a particular focus on Asian American communities and customers doing business between the U.S. and Asia. It takes customer deposits and finances business operations, property purchases and development, and cross-border trade. Commercial lending accounts for most of its loan portfolio, alongside residential mortgages and other consumer loans.

Deposits provide its main source of funding. Borrowers pay interest on loans, and the bank also earns interest on securities and cash holdings. Most revenue comes from the interest left after paying depositors and other funding providers; service fees and foreign-exchange income make up a smaller share. Earnings depend on funding costs relative to asset yields and on borrowers repaying their loans. Its real-estate lending is concentrated in California, making local property conditions particularly important.

Its China subsidiary holds a commercial banking license allowing it to accept deposits and make loans there. Capital and liquidity rules constrain how much the business can expand. At the parent-company level, cash comes mainly from East West Bank dividends, which federal and California rules limit.
