BV Financial conducts its business through its wholly owned BayVanguard Bank, serving households and businesses in the Baltimore metropolitan area and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The bank takes customer deposits and uses them mainly to make loans. Borrowers’ interest payments supply most revenue, with investment securities contributing less; the bank pays interest on deposits and borrowings that fund these assets.
Almost all lending is secured by real estate. Commercial investment properties form the largest loan category, followed by residential mortgages. The investment real estate group also lends outside the bank’s local market, and much of its commercial property collateral is outside Maryland. Earnings depend on borrowers’ ability to repay, the performance of financed properties, and keeping deposit costs below asset yields. Banking capital rules also limit dividends and share repurchases if capital falls below required buffers.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Orrstown Financial Services Inc competes with BV Financial’s BayVanguard Bank for banking customers in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford Counties. Both serve local borrowers and depositors, so Orrstown’s customer gains in those markets are worth watching alongside BayVanguard’s lending and deposit gathering.
Shore Bancshares Inc, through Shore United Bank, competes with BV Financial’s BayVanguard for Maryland households’ and businesses’ deposits and commercial and residential property loans. Watch Shore’s deposit gathering and property lending in Maryland: these are the same customers and funding that BayVanguard seeks.
Western New England Bancorp, Inc. offers a close comparison for BV Financial’s property-lending exposure: its Westfield Bank lends to businesses and individuals, with commercial real estate at about half of loans and residential real estate making up most of the remainder, much like BayVanguard. Watch repayment quality and demand in those two loan books when assessing BayVanguard’s property loans.
OceanFirst Financial Corp shares BV Financial’s heavy exposure to property borrowers: loans to commercial property investors and residential mortgages dominate both OceanFirst Bank’s and BayVanguard’s lending. OceanFirst’s repayment performance in these loan groups is a useful comparison for BayVanguard’s property credit quality.
Finward Bancorp shares BV Financial’s reliance on public deposits to fund loans secured mainly by single-family homes and commercial property, through Peoples Bank. Watch the deposit rates Peoples Bank offers and the rates it charges borrowers to compare the pressure on BayVanguard’s lending margins.
BCB Bancorp Inc (NJ) shares BV Financial’s dependence on customer deposits to fund commercial property loans and residential mortgages through BCB Community Bank. BCB’s ability to attract low-cost deposits is worth comparing with BayVanguard, whose interest paid on interest-bearing deposits rose 18.4% in 2025 amid intense competition and a greater share of higher-yielding certificates of deposit.
Provident Financial Hldgs shares BV Financial’s model of putting customer deposits mainly into residential and commercial property loans that the bank keeps on its books, through Provident Savings Bank. Provident earns primarily loan and investment interest from serving consumers and small to mid-sized businesses in Southern California’s Inland Empire; its property-loan interest income and repayment quality offer comparisons for BayVanguard.
Sound Financial Bancorp, Inc. shares BV Financial’s reliance on deposits and borrowed funds to finance residential mortgages and commercial property loans through Sound Community Bank. Watch the cost of Sound’s deposits and borrowings against the income from those loans to compare funding pressure on BayVanguard.
Orrstown Financial Services Inc earningsORRF
Orrstown Financial Services competes with BayVanguard Bank for borrowers and depositors in the Baltimore area, so its report will show how active local banking demand and competition are.
Read Orrstown's loan and deposit trends together. Growth in both would point to active local borrowing and deposit demand, while also showing that competitors are pursuing the customers BayVanguard wants; weakness in both could signal softer demand, not necessarily customers shifting to Orrstown. The comparison helps readers judge whether the local market is active and competition is intensifying.
BV Financial, Inc. earningsThis company
BayVanguard Bank earns mainly from loan interest, and BV Financial's report will show whether deposit costs and property-loan risks are eating into that income.
Read net interest income and net interest margin together, then compare them with deposit interest expense and the provision for credit losses. Net interest margin is net interest income as a share of interest-earning assets. If it holds or widens without a marked rise in credit-loss provisions, loan income is still covering funding costs and property-loan repayment has not clearly worsened. If the margin narrows while provisions rise, deposit competition may be squeezing the return between loan income and funding costs, or borrowers may be repaying less reliably; that tells readers whether this lending-and-deposit model is still producing income on sound terms.
Finward Bancorp earningsFNWD
Finward Bancorp's report will compare loan income with deposit costs, showing how rate changes may squeeze or support the lending spread BayVanguard Bank relies on.
Compare Finward's loan yields with its deposit costs, and note how quickly each changes. If loan yields hold up relative to deposit costs, loan income is still covering funding costs and BayVanguard may face less spread pressure; if deposit costs rise faster or loan yields fall first, the spread is being squeezed and BayVanguard faces the same pricing challenge. The comparison shows whether rate changes are helping banks preserve this income or thinning it.
Western New England Bancorp, Inc. earningsWNEB
Western New England Bancorp has a loan mix similar to BayVanguard Bank, so its report can show how commercial property and residential borrowers are repaying and whether loan demand is holding up.
Separate demand and repayment trends for commercial real estate and residential loans, and watch for increases in past-due or nonperforming loans or charge-offs. Steady demand and repayment in both groups would suggest a property-heavy loan mix like BayVanguard's is still functioning normally; rising delinquencies, nonperforming loans or charge-offs, especially alongside weaker new lending, would put both income and credit costs under pressure. The comparison helps readers judge whether BayVanguard's concentrated property lending faces stable conditions or growing risk.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s rate decision signals whether borrowing costs are rising or falling, which can change the interest BV Financial earns on its commercial real estate and home loans and securities and the rates it pays BayVanguard Bank depositors, affecting the spread that drives its earnings.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates may lift returns on new loans and assets that reprice, but BayVanguard Bank may also have to raise rates to retain deposits amid local competition, increasing funding costs and potentially narrowing BV Financial’s spread.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates may reduce returns on new loans and assets that reprice, but could also ease BayVanguard Bank’s deposit and borrowing costs; if funding costs fall faster than asset yields, BV Financial’s spread may widen.
BCB Bancorp Inc earningsBCBP
BCB Bancorp relies on customer deposits to fund property loans, and its report will show whether it can attract lower-cost deposits for comparison with BayVanguard Bank's funding pressures.
Read changes in BCB's lower-cost deposits alongside its deposit interest expense. Growth in lower-cost deposits with contained funding costs would show an ability to attract customer funds; a shift toward higher-rate certificates of deposit or borrowings could raise interest expense and show that keeping funding is costing more. BCB and BayVanguard are not in the same market, so this comparison is about how deposit competition affects bank funding costs, not about the two banks winning the same customers.
