Company

Company overview

Urban One helps local and national advertisers reach African-American and urban consumers through radio, television and digital content. Cable television and radio broadcasting account for most of its revenue, with cable television the largest business. Advertisers can buy placements aimed at particular audience groups or campaigns spanning several of its brands.

Its Radio One stations sell advertising time and program sponsorships, with local advertisers supplying most core radio revenue. Reach Media sells advertising around syndicated programs such as the Rickey Smiley Morning Show. TV One and CLEO TV sell television advertising; TV One also receives fees from distributors, generally based on how many subscribers receive its programming. Interactive One sells advertising on its websites, earning revenue as ads are shown to users.

The business depends on content attracting listeners, viewers and website users: audience ratings and traffic affect advertisers’ choices and the prices Urban One can charge. Advertisers generally make no long-term commitments and can cancel, reduce or postpone spending without penalty. Most radio-station revenue comes from a small group of major markets. The television networks depend on distributors continuing to carry them on acceptable terms. Radio stations must maintain Federal Communications Commission licenses, and ownership limits and required regulatory approvals constrain station acquisitions and transfers of control.

  • iHeartMedia and Urban One compete for advertisers buying access to broadcast-radio listeners, syndicated shows and digital audio audiences. Watch iHeartMedia’s radio advertising alongside its podcast and iHeartRadio business for clues to demand for the audio advertising Urban One sells.

  • Mediaco Holding Inc.’s Hip Hop and R&B brands compete with Urban One’s brands for urban listeners and the advertisers seeking them on radio and digital media. Its audience strength in those genres is worth watching against Urban One’s ability to sell advertisers access to African-American and urban consumers.

  • Beasley Broadcasting Group Inc and Urban One compete for radio advertising in Charlotte, and both offer advertisers campaigns combining radio and digital media. Watch Beasley’s local advertising sales and station-related digital revenue; Charlotte is one of Urban One’s seven largest radio-revenue markets.

  • TOWNSQUARE MEDIA, INC. and Urban One both depend on businesses paying to advertise on radio and digital properties, making Townsquare a comparison for advertising demand rather than a stated local rival. Compare its Broadcast Advertising and Digital Advertising revenue separately when assessing Urban One’s radio and website advertising.

  • Saga Communications, Inc. shares Urban One’s dependence on attracting the listeners local and national advertisers want, with both selling radio advertising alongside digital campaigns. Watch Saga’s ratings among advertisers’ target listeners: it says the three or four highest-rated stations in many markets capture a disproportionately large share of advertising revenue.

  • Sirius XM Holdings, Inc.’s satellite radio, Pandora and podcasts compete with Urban One’s stations and syndicated shows for listeners and advertisers. SiriusXM earns mainly subscriber fees, so its audience and advertising business are more relevant to Urban One than subscription revenue alone.

  • Alphabet Inc.’s Google and YouTube sell advertising that competes for the brand budgets funding Urban One’s websites and television networks. Watch YouTube and Google’s brand-advertising business when assessing demand for Interactive One’s banner and sponsorship ads and TV One’s television airtime.

  • Meta Platforms, Inc. competes with Urban One’s digital properties for marketers paying to reach specific audiences. Watch advertising on Meta’s apps, including Facebook and Instagram, as a comparison for demand for Interactive One’s website banner and sponsorship ads—not Meta’s hardware business.
