Company

Company overview

Tutor Perini Corporation works mainly in the United States, with government agencies providing most of its revenue. Civil construction is its largest business, building and replacing infrastructure such as transit systems, tunnels and bridges. Building construction is the next largest, including hospitals and detention facilities. Its specialty contractors, including Five Star Electric, install electrical, mechanical and other building systems, both on the company’s own projects and for outside customers.

Customers hire Tutor Perini to plan, manage and carry out construction, sometimes combining design and construction in one contract. The company performs parts of the work itself and earns revenue as projects advance. Civil contracts are awarded through price-based bidding or proposals that also weigh technical qualifications and delivery capabilities; contractors typically must first demonstrate technical and financial strength.

The business depends heavily on state and local government funding, and two large customers each contribute a substantial share of revenue across multiple projects. Most contracted work carries a fixed price, making construction costs central to profitability. Payment for customer-directed extra work can depend on resolving disagreements over scope and price. Government procurement rules also govern access to contracts, and violations can bar the company from future government work.

Tutor Perini's results hinge on funded public megaprojects and delivering large fixed-price contracts, with privately held Kiewit and Skanska's U.S. operations important civil rivals to watch.

  • Granite Construction competes with Tutor Perini to build bridges, rail, tunnels and water infrastructure for public agencies, tying both to public infrastructure funding. Watch Granite's construction work for municipal water agencies and transportation customers rather than its sales of asphalt and aggregates.

  • Sterling Infrastructure overlaps with Tutor Perini in building highways, bridges and rail for transportation customers, and in concrete and building-system work. Its Transportation Solutions results offer a closer read on their shared construction demand than its site-development and electrical work for data centers.

  • AECOM earns design and construction-management fees from the same public infrastructure programs that pay Tutor Perini to build, and Tutor Perini also names it as a Building competitor. Watch AECOM's public-client planning and design engagements as they expand into broader projects or programs.

  • EMCOR competes with Tutor Perini's specialty contractors for paid work installing electrical, heating and cooling, plumbing and fire-protection systems in buildings and infrastructure. Its U.S. electrical and mechanical construction results are the relevant comparison, rather than its separate building and industrial services businesses.

  • Orion Group Holdings builds Navy and port facilities for public and private clients, overlapping with Tutor Perini's military infrastructure and waterfront repairs. Watch Orion's marine construction awards for evidence of demand in this shared market, rather than its concrete business.

  • Construction Partners shares the public transportation spending cycle that supports Tutor Perini's civil work, earning revenue by building and maintaining roads and bridges for infrastructure customers. Its public road construction and maintenance work across the U.S. Sunbelt is the part to watch for that funding demand.

  • Comfort Systems USA competes with Tutor Perini's specialty contractors to install heating and cooling, plumbing and electrical systems for building customers, including healthcare and government facilities. Its healthcare and government revenue is a closer comparison for Tutor Perini than its larger technology and manufacturing businesses.

  • Everus Construction Group competes with Tutor Perini's specialty businesses to install building systems for commercial, industrial and institutional customers, working for general contractors and end users. Watch revenue and margins in its Electrical & Mechanical segment, where that overlap sits, rather than its utility-line construction business.
