Company

Company overview

Terex builds machines that help customers collect waste, maintain utility lines, process materials and work at height. Its environmental business supplies waste-collection and recycling equipment and utility-service trucks. Its materials-processing business makes equipment that crushes, sorts and moves materials for construction, quarrying and recycling. Genie platforms lift workers to elevated jobs, while its telehandlers lift and place loads.

Rental companies and independent distributors buy equipment to rent or sell to users; Terex also sells directly and supplies replacement parts and service. National rental companies account for a substantial share of sales in its aerial and environmental businesses. Sales therefore depend partly on these companies’ fleet purchases, dealer coverage and buyers’ access to third-party financing, as well as customers’ construction and infrastructure spending.

The completed merger with REV added customized vehicles for public services, commercial infrastructure and consumer leisure, mainly serving U.S. customers. Terex is also reviewing its aerial business for a possible sale; that is not a completed disposal.

Some products must meet emissions, fuel-efficiency, noise and safety standards. These requirements affect equipment design and the cost and availability of components such as vehicle chassis.

Beyond rental-fleet investment and waste-hauler spending, Terex faces important rivals to watch: Metso in materials processing and privately held Altec in utility equipment.

  • Oshkosh competes for Terex's equipment buyers across aerial platforms, telehandlers, refuse collection vehicles and concrete mixers, with firefighting vehicles added after the REV merger. Watch its aerial-equipment and refuse-vehicle sales for competition facing Terex's Genie and waste-equipment businesses.

  • Astec competes with Terex for construction and materials-processing customers buying crushers, screens, conveyors, and wood-processing and recycling equipment. Its Materials Solutions results are the part to watch for competition facing Terex's materials-processing business.

  • Federal Signal's New Way garbage-truck bodies compete directly with Terex's Heil products for waste-hauler and municipal purchases. New Way sales are the business to watch for competition over those customers' equipment spending.

  • Terex's utility-equipment sales are tied to Custom Truck One Source, Inc., which buys equipment for its fleet and sells and rents Terex equipment to utilities and infrastructure contractors. Watch Custom Truck's fleet investment and demand from those customers.

  • Deere's Kleemann equipment competes with Terex for buyers of crushers, screens and conveyors, but agriculture drives most of Deere's equipment sales. Watch Kleemann's business rather than Deere's overall sales when assessing competition for Terex's materials-processing equipment.

  • Caterpillar and Terex both depend on construction, infrastructure and mining investment for equipment demand, and compete directly in material handlers. Caterpillar's construction and mining equipment sales offer a read on the spending that also supports Terex's materials-processing equipment.

Terex's report will show whether sales of aerial and materials-processing equipment are translating into better operating profit in those businesses, rather than merely lifting consolidated revenue.

  2. 2:00 PMET

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Fed’s policy rate tracks the cost of borrowing across the economy; because Terex says equipment demand depends on interest rates and significant sales use third-party financing, it can affect customers’ ability to finance purchases and Terex’s equipment sales.

    Industrial Production MoM (Oct)

Factory, mine and utility output shows demand for industrial goods and their inputs; because Terex depends on suppliers for equipment components and final assemblies, production constraints can raise its costs or delay deliveries and sales.
