Company overview

Seagate supplies the drives and systems that cloud providers and enterprises use to store data. Data centers account for the vast majority of its business, while a smaller business serves industrial, commercial and consumer devices. Equipment manufacturers are its largest sales channel; it also sells through distributors and retailers. Major customers place purchase orders under broader supply agreements, and some commit to longer-term purchases of high-capacity drives.

Revenue is concentrated among a small group of equipment manufacturers and cloud operators, so their infrastructure spending and deployment schedules strongly influence demand. Seagate commits to inventory and manufacturing capacity before that demand arrives. It also needs customers to approve new drives for use in their systems before large-volume sales can begin. Its Mozaic platform uses heat-assisted magnetic recording to fit more data onto a disk, and the transition depends on successful customer qualification and volume production.

Export controls and sanctions restrict where, to whom and for what uses Seagate can sell. Under its settlement with U.S. authorities over past HDD sales to Huawei, an export denial order remains suspended. Keeping that suspension depends on making required payments and completing compliance audits.

Seagate’s results hinge on hyperscale demand for high-capacity nearline drives and on HDD pricing and technology competition with Western Digital and Toshiba Electronics Devices & Storage Corporation.

  • Western Digital competes directly with Seagate to sell high-capacity hard drives to cloud operators and enterprise equipment makers, and drives for PCs and consumer storage. Watch its cloud-drive products’ capacity and cost efficiency: they show the technology competition Seagate faces in its main market.

  • Sandisk’s enterprise and consumer solid-state drives compete for spending that could go to Seagate’s hard drives, though flash and disks often meet different speed and cost needs. Its high-performance enterprise SSD business serves cloud and enterprise customers, making it the line to watch for this alternative to HDD storage.

  • Micron’s flash-based solid-state drives compete with Seagate’s hard drives for storage budgets, while cloud infrastructure investment supports both Micron’s data-center memory sales and Seagate’s nearline-drive demand. Watch Micron’s memory sales to large hyperscale cloud customers for a view of the server spending behind that shared demand.

  • Everpure sells high-capacity all-flash systems to enterprises, competing with storage systems built around Seagate hard drives for enterprise and unstructured-data storage budgets. Watch its FlashBlade products for unstructured data, where this competition reaches beyond individual drives to whole storage systems.

  • NetApp’s enterprise storage systems and data-management services respond to the same investment and equipment-refresh cycles that drive Seagate’s enterprise hard-drive sales. Its Hybrid Cloud business, which sells storage hardware, software and support, is the part to watch for enterprise storage spending.

  • Microsoft buys high-capacity hard-drive storage for its cloud infrastructure, so Azure’s storage deployment plans offer a concrete signal of demand for Seagate’s nearline drives.

  • Amazon buys high-capacity hard-drive storage for AWS infrastructure, making AWS’s cloud storage expansion an important demand signal for Seagate.

  • Alphabet’s Google buys high-capacity hard-drive storage for its cloud and internet-service infrastructure, so its storage deployment plans help gauge demand for Seagate’s nearline drives.

  • Quantum’s storage and archival systems benefit alongside Seagate’s enterprise drives when organizations expand capacity to store and retain unstructured data. Watch demand for Quantum’s long-term archives as a sign of spending on data retention, rather than cloud-drive purchases specifically.

Agenda

  1. Time to be announced

    Western Digital Corp. earningsWDC

Western Digital competes with Seagate for high-capacity drive orders from cloud operators and enterprises, so its cloud-drive results will show how tough the technology contest is for Seagate.

  1. Time to be announced
    Major

Seagate Technology Holdings PLC earningsThis company

Seagate relies heavily on sales and pricing of nearline hard drives for data centers, and this report will show whether demand for high-capacity drives is still supporting its gross margin.

  2. 8:30 AMET pre-market

    Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)

Durable goods orders track purchases of long-lasting goods and equipment, so stronger business buying can support Seagate’s HDD and storage-system orders from OEMs and hyperscale customers, while weaker buying can leave less revenue.

  1. Time to be announced

    Microsoft Corp earningsMSFT

Microsoft buys hard drives for Azure cloud infrastructure, so its report will show whether cloud-storage expansion still offers a demand signal for Seagate's nearline drives.

  2. 2:00 PMET

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Federal Reserve’s policy rate guides borrowing costs across the economy; when rates affect customers’ IT budgets, their purchases of Seagate HDDs and storage systems can be delayed or canceled, changing its revenue.

  1. Time to be announced

    Sandisk Corporation earningsSNDK

SanDisk's enterprise solid-state drives compete with Seagate's hard drives for some cloud and enterprise storage budgets, so its results will show whether this alternative is gaining ground.

in 29 daysTue, Nov 17

  1. 8:30 AMET pre-market

    Retail Sales MoM (Oct)

Retail sales track consumer spending at retailers; stronger demand can support orders for Seagate’s Edge IoT products through retailers and resellers, while weaker sales or rising channel inventory can cut purchases and intensify price pressure.

  2. 9:15 AMET pre-market

    Industrial Production MoM (Oct)

Industrial production and capacity use track factory, mine and utility output and how much capacity is being used; stronger activity can support Seagate’s limited-source component supply and selected contract assembly, helping it make and deliver products to customers.
