Company

Company overview

Rubico Inc.’s operating fleet consists of the Suezmax tankers M/T Eco Malibu and M/T Eco West Coast, which transport crude oil. Both are chartered to Clearlake Shipping Pte Ltd., its sole revenue-generating customer. Clearlake pays fixed daily hire under time charters and generally covers voyage expenses, while Rubico pays vessel operating costs and charter-arrangement commissions. Rubico finances the vessels through sale-and-leaseback arrangements.

Revenue depends on the ships remaining available for service and Clearlake meeting its obligations. When charters end, the rates Rubico can earn depend on demand for oil transportation and the supply of tankers. Related-party manager CSI handles chartering and vessel operations, including crewing, maintenance and repairs.

The ships must meet maritime safety and environmental requirements. Losing required vessel classification or failing a mandatory survey prevents a ship from trading or earning charter revenue. Sanctions also restrict the countries and counterparties with which Rubico may do business.

Rubico’s near-term results depend more on keeping its vessels available and collecting fixed charter payments from Clearlake, its sole operating customer, than on immediate moves in spot tanker rates.

  • TOP Ships Inc. competes with Rubico for customers renting tankers to carry crude oil and petroleum products, and spun off Rubico with its two operating Suezmax crude tankers. Watch the rates TOP Ships secures on new charters for a view of the market Rubico faces beyond its existing fixed-rate contracts.

  • Nordic American Tanker competes with Rubico to carry customers’ crude oil in Suezmax tankers, but its greater spot-rate exposure makes its earnings more sensitive to current freight rates than Rubico’s fixed charter income. Watch its revenue after voyage costs per operating day—the TCE rate—for a read on Suezmax earning conditions.

  • Teekay Tankers Ltd. competes with Rubico to transport crude oil for energy companies and traders, but its predominantly spot business responds to freight-rate changes sooner than Rubico’s fixed-rate charters. Its spot tanker revenue is a window into the oil-shipment market, not a signal that Rubico’s daily charter payments will immediately change.

  • International Seaways, Inc. competes with Rubico for customers hiring Suezmax tankers to carry crude oil, and its medium-range product tankers, known as MRs, also match Rubico’s planned expansion. Watch its refined-product transport business for context on the market Rubico plans to enter with its MR tanker, expected for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2029 under a seven-year Trafigura charter subject to customary conditions.
