TOP Ships Inc. provides vessels for transporting crude oil, petroleum products and liquid chemicals by sea. Its operating tankers are on time charters: customers hire them for agreed periods and pay a fixed daily rate. The customers typically cover voyage expenses, while TOP Ships pays vessel operating costs and commissions. Tanker hire supplies most revenue; a smaller business charters the megayacht M/Y Para Bellvm on shorter terms.
Most revenue comes from Clearlake Shipping, Trafigura Maritime Logistics, Central Tankers Chartering and Weco Tankers. The business depends on these charterers paying and on vessels remaining available to earn hire. Fixed charter rates do not immediately follow market movements, but demand for oil transport and the supply of tankers influence the terms available when contracts expire. Charterers may also seek renegotiation or default when market rates fall.
The vessels must meet maritime safety and environmental requirements and retain certification from an authorized classification society. A vessel that loses that certification or fails a required survey cannot trade between ports and earn charter income.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
TOP Ships’ near-term results depend more on contracted hire, fleet deployment and financing costs than spot tanker rates, making Trafigura—the charterer of both operating VLCCs and eight planned tankers—the company to watch.
Rubico operates two Suezmax crude tankers spun off from TOP Ships and competes for the same charter customers, including Clearlake and Trafigura. Watch its hire agreements with those shared customers: Clearlake pays for both operating ships, while Trafigura has contracted its planned product tanker.
Okeanis Eco Tankers competes with TOP Ships using modern, fuel-efficient Suezmax and VLCC crude tankers, but its mainly spot business reacts to freight changes sooner than TOP Ships’ long-term hire contracts. Customers mostly pay Okeanis to carry individual cargoes between ports, making its voyage revenue a faster read on crude-tanker rates.
Tsakos Energy Navigation competes with TOP Ships for oil companies’ and refiners’ tanker business, with customers paying to hire ships for agreed periods. Its broader fleet also includes LNG carriers and shuttle tankers, so focus on its conventional-tanker charter rates when judging the market facing TOP Ships.
Performance Shipping competes with TOP Ships for customers paying to transport crude oil in Aframax and Suezmax tankers, but has more exposure to short-term rates. Its spot voyages and ship hires of less than a year provide a quicker view of changing charter conditions than TOP Ships’ long-term contracts.
Scorpio Tankers’ large fleet competes for the refined-product transport business served by TOP Ships’ operating medium-range (MR) tankers and planned expansion. Watch Scorpio’s MR fleet and newbuild deliveries for changes in the ships available to customers moving refined petroleum products.
Teekay Corporation competes with TOP Ships indirectly through its controlling stake in Teekay Tankers, which earns money carrying customers’ crude oil and refined products. Its tanker segment is the relevant comparison; its separate marine-services business includes maintaining and crewing government-owned vessels in Australia.
Pyxis Tankers and TOP Ships both earn hire from customers using fuel-efficient medium-range (MR) tankers to carry refined products and liquid bulk cargoes. Watch Pyxis’ product-tanker hire rates rather than its dry-bulk business when comparing the market for TOP Ships’ smaller tankers.
Imperial Petroleum competes with TOP Ships for customers shipping refined products in medium-range (MR) tankers and crude oil in Suezmax tankers. Its substantial dry-bulk fleet also contributes to voyage revenue, so company-wide revenue is not a clean measure of the tanker market facing TOP Ships.
Navios Maritime Partners competes with TOP Ships by renting crude and product tankers to customers for agreed periods, while containers and dry bulk diversify its results. Watch its tanker charter coverage: as of March 5, 2026, it had fixed 87% of available tanker days for 2026, excluding index-linked days.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
TOP SHIPS’ Fed-rate exposure matters because it tracks the policy rate that generally influences SOFR, the benchmark used to set interest on much of the company’s vessel financing, changing the cost of its debt and the cash left from charter hire.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
For TOP SHIPS, a higher-than-expected Fed rate can push SOFR-linked interest higher, leaving less of the daily hire from its chartered vessels to cover principal and other costs and reducing cash flow and earnings.
If it comes in below expectations
For TOP SHIPS, a lower-than-expected Fed rate can ease SOFR-linked interest, leaving more charter hire after debt payments and other costs and supporting cash flow and earnings.
Scorpio Tankers Inc. earningsSTNG
Scorpio Tankers’ report will show how refined-product shippers use its large MR fleet and how its newbuilds add competition for TOP Ships’ customers.
Focus on Scorpio’s MR product-tanker activity and newbuild deliveries, not its company-wide results. Steady fleet use alongside deliveries would suggest customers are absorbing added capacity, leaving TOP Ships’ smaller tankers with an active rival; weaker use or deliveries outpacing demand would point to less competition for those customers.
Pyxis Tankers Inc. earningsPXS
Pyxis Tankers’ product-tanker hire rates will show what customers pay to use MR ships like TOP Ships’ smaller tankers.
Watch Pyxis Tankers’ product-tanker hire rates, not its dry-bulk business. Steady or rising rates would show customers still pay for MR tanker capacity; falling rates would point to a weaker pricing environment when TOP Ships renews or replaces charters for its smaller tankers.
