Reddit’s website and apps host communities called subreddits, where users post, discuss and vote on content and volunteer moderators enforce community rules. Businesses pay to place ads alongside these conversations, using signals from users’ interests and activity on Reddit rather than third-party tracking. Advertisers pay for clicks, views or campaigns delivered over an agreed period. Advertising supplies the vast majority of revenue, and advertisers generally make no long-term spending commitments.
The business depends on users continuing to contribute and return, volunteer moderators keeping communities functioning, and enough content being suitable for ads. A small group of prolific contributors supplies a large share of content. Google and other search engines also bring visitors to Reddit. Privacy rules govern ad targeting and measurement, while online-safety and age-assurance rules can restrict access for younger users.
Reddit also charges partners for access to its content, including for AI training and business analysis. This licensing business is still at an early stage, and almost all of its contract value to date is concentrated in a small number of partners.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Reddit’s results hinge chiefly on audience growth and returns for advertisers, with privately held TikTok a key rival for both users and advertisers.
Pinterest and Reddit compete for advertisers paying to reach interest-based audiences, using people’s activity on their own platforms to place relevant ads. Watch how Pinterest turns product discovery and saved Pins into advertiser clicks and purchases—the returns Reddit must compete with.
Snap competes with Reddit for businesses’ brand-building and response-driven ad budgets, selling access to Snapchat users rather than Reddit communities. Watch whether its Dynamic Ads, which match businesses’ product catalogs to users, deliver the advertiser returns Reddit is also working to improve.
Meta Platforms competes with Reddit for the same marketers’ spending and for people’s time in social feeds and communities. Its advertising revenue across apps such as Facebook and Instagram is the relevant line to watch, rather than its sales of virtual- and augmented-reality hardware.
Alphabet competes with Reddit for advertisers and people seeking information, while Reddit also relies on Google Cloud to host part of its platform. Alongside advertising on Google Search and YouTube, watch Google Cloud’s service availability and pricing, since interruptions or higher hosting costs can reach Reddit directly.
Nextdoor Holdings, Inc. and Reddit both sell businesses ads around community conversations, using users’ interests and activity on their own platforms; Nextdoor focuses on neighborhoods rather than topic-based groups. Its ads for small local businesses offer a useful comparison as Reddit seeks more small and medium-sized advertisers.
YELP INC. competes with Reddit for consumers seeking community recommendations and for businesses paying to reach them, with Yelp centered on local-business ratings and reviews. Watch its advertising revenue for a read on businesses’ willingness to pay for audiences looking for recommendations.
Amazon competes with Reddit for businesses’ digital advertising budgets, but Reddit also depends on Amazon’s AWS hosting infrastructure to help run its platform.
Meta Platforms, Inc. earningsMETA
Meta's report will show how much advertisers are spending on social platforms, where Meta competes with Reddit for both ad budgets and people's time.
Compare Meta's ad revenue with ad impressions and the average price per ad. If all three rise, advertisers are spending more to reach people on social platforms, making Reddit's competition tougher; if impressions rise but price falls, more ads are being delivered without clear evidence that advertisers are willing to pay more, so that is not proof of a broadening ad market.
Alphabet Inc. earningsGOOG
Google's report will show how advertisers are spending on search and video, channels that compete for ad budgets and reach people looking for information.
Read Google's Search ad revenue and YouTube ad revenue separately. Growth in both would show that advertisers are still spending in search and video, giving Reddit plenty of competing destinations for ad budgets; if one grows while the other weakens, demand is not strengthening across the board. Neither result tells you whether Reddit's own traffic from unpaid Google search results has changed.
Reddit, Inc. earningsThis company
Reddit makes most of its money from ads placed around communities and conversations, and this report will show whether more ad impressions and stronger pricing are both lifting ad revenue.
Read ad revenue alongside ad impressions and pricing, then check whether daily active unique visitors (DAUq) are moving in the same direction. If impressions and pricing both rise, Reddit is selling more ads and getting more for each impression; if impressions rise while pricing weakens, its reach is expanding but advertisers are paying less per impression, which makes the quality of that growth less convincing.
Nextdoor Holdings, Inc. earningsNXDR
Nextdoor's report will show whether small local businesses keep paying for community-based ads, a useful read on the smaller advertisers Reddit is trying to attract.
Read Nextdoor's ad revenue alongside what it says about small-business demand. If revenue grows and the company describes that demand as steady, small businesses are paying for community-based reach—a useful sign for Reddit's effort to attract smaller advertisers; if revenue or demand weakens, that opportunity looks less certain. Nextdoor's results still cannot substitute for Reddit's own ad and customer figures.
