Philip Morris International serves smokers and nicotine users through two main businesses. Cigarettes, led by Marlboro, still make up most of its product shipments. Its smoke-free business includes IQOS devices that heat specially designed tobacco units rather than burn them, ZYN nicotine pouches and VEEV e-vapor products. IQOS links device sales to sales of its proprietary consumables. The company aims to replace cigarette sales with smoke-free products, but cigarettes remain central to its business.
Consumers buy through retailers and, for smoke-free products, the company’s own stores and online channels. Distributors, wholesalers and retailers also pay the company for products they resell. A distributor in Europe and another serving East Asia, Australia and global travel retail each account for a substantial share of revenue, making these relationships important to distribution.
Sales depend on demand, pricing and the mix of products consumers buy, including smokers’ willingness to switch to smoke-free products as cigarette consumption declines in many markets. Regulation restricts product sales and marketing. In the United States, authorized IQOS and ZYN products carry strict FDA requirements, and new versions require authorization.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Philip Morris International’s results hinge on cigarette pricing and smoke-free adoption; Japan Tobacco and Imperial Brands are important global rivals to watch beyond this list.
British American Tobacco competes with Philip Morris International for adult consumers worldwide across cigarettes, heated tobacco, vaping and nicotine pouches. Watch BAT’s cigarette revenue and its vaping, heated-tobacco and pouch sales for signs of pricing strength and consumers’ shift toward smoke-free products.
Altria’s on! nicotine pouches and NJOY vaping products compete with Philip Morris International’s expanding U.S. smoke-free business, led by ZYN; Altria sells mainly to U.S. wholesalers and large retailers. Its on! sales are worth watching alongside ZYN as the two compete for oral-nicotine customers.
Universal buys and processes tobacco leaf for Philip Morris International, making PMI both a customer and a source of demand: PMI and its affiliates accounted for at least 10% of Universal’s revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Watch Universal’s leaf supply and pricing news for clues to PMI’s tobacco costs.
Turning Point Brands competes for adult consumers with FRE and ALP oral products against Philip Morris International’s ZYN, but also pays PMI-owned Swedish Match to produce all its U.S. loose-leaf chewing tobacco. Its FRE and ALP sales show the competing offer to ZYN, while its chewing-tobacco business depends on a PMI subsidiary.

Philip Morris International’s report will show whether sales growth from heated tobacco and nicotine pouches can outweigh falling cigarette shipments and the cost of expanding smoke-free products.
Read net revenues and operating income alongside shipment trends for smoke-free products and cigarettes. If smoke-free shipments keep growing and both measures strengthen, pricing and a richer product mix are more than offsetting cigarette declines and expansion costs. If revenue rises but operating income weakens, costs or an unfavorable mix are absorbing the gains; if both falter, the transition is not yet offsetting pressure on cigarettes.

Altria’s report will show how U.S. demand for nicotine pouches is changing in the market where its on! brand competes with Philip Morris International’s ZYN for customers.
Focus on on! sales, distinct from Altria’s NJOY vaping business. Stronger on! sales would support the view that pouch-category demand is healthy, but would not establish that ZYN is growing. Weaker sales could signal softer category demand or tougher competition, a headwind for Philip Morris International’s U.S. pouch business as well.
