Company

Company overview

British American Tobacco buys tobacco leaf from contracted farmers and suppliers, manufactures cigarettes, and sells tobacco and nicotine products through retail channels to adult consumers worldwide. Cigarettes and other combustible tobacco products account for most revenue. Its cigarette brands include Newport, Camel and Lucky Strike. The U.S. is its largest single market, and Newport and its other menthol cigarette brands contribute a significant share of group sales.

Its smaller smokeless business sells Vuse vaping products, glo devices and consumables that release nicotine through heating rather than burning, and Velo nicotine pouches placed between the gum and upper lip. BAT aims to encourage adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking to switch to these products, using earnings from its combustible business to help fund the transition.

The business depends on sales volumes and its ability to raise prices as legitimate cigarette markets contract. Higher taxes, consumer affordability and cheaper illicit products limit that pricing room. Regulation restricts manufacturing, packaging, advertising, sales and use, and can prohibit products or flavours. In the U.S., continued sales of Velo products depend on FDA authorization decisions; products denied authorization generally must be withdrawn unless a court or agency intervenes.

BAT’s results also depend on rivalry with Japan Tobacco and Imperial Brands and earnings from its substantial investment in ITC, none of which appears in this list.

  • Altria competes with BAT’s Reynolds business for U.S. adult consumers buying cigarettes, moist smokeless tobacco, nicotine pouches and vaping products, selling mainly through wholesalers and large retailers. Watch its Marlboro cigarette business for competitive pressure on BAT’s Newport and Camel brands.

  • Philip Morris International competes for BAT’s adult cigarette and nicotine customers: its heated-tobacco IQOS, nicotine pouches ZYN and vaping brand VEEV challenge glo, Velo and Vuse, respectively. Watch IQOS developments alongside glo’s rollout, as BAT says competitive pressure has affected its heated-products growth.

  • Universal buys and processes tobacco leaf for BAT, so BAT relies on it for part of its raw-material supply while Universal counts BAT among its six largest paying customers. Watch leaf availability and costs in Universal’s tobacco business for signs of pressure on BAT’s cigarette inputs.

  • Turning Point Brands competes for BAT’s U.S. adult oral-tobacco customers through Stoker’s moist snuff and for Velo customers through FRE and ALP nicotine pouches. Watch FRE and ALP sales as a sign of competition in the U.S. pouch market that drove much of BAT’s Modern Oral growth in 2025.
