Company

Company overview

Polaris serves people who ride for recreation or need vehicles for work on farms, ranches and construction sites. Its Off Road business supplies most revenue, with products such as RZR sport vehicles, RANGER utility vehicles, Sportsman all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Vehicle sales bring in most of the company's revenue; replacement parts, accessories, riding gear and apparel add sales through dealers, distributors and online.

Smaller businesses make recreational boats under Bennington, Godfrey and Hurricane, the Slingshot open-air roadster, and light-duty hauling and passenger vehicles under Goupil and Aixam. Polaris has sold a majority interest in Indian Motorcycle, so motorcycles are no longer a wholly owned business.

Independent dealers buy products from Polaris and resell them to users. Most vehicle and related-product sales use dealer inventory financing, notably through Polaris Acceptance, its joint venture with a Wells Fargo subsidiary, and other Wells Fargo arrangements. These lenders pay Polaris within days of shipment while financing the dealers' purchases. Polaris shares some financing costs and has limited obligations to repurchase repossessed products. Dealer retail sales drive off-road vehicle orders and production scheduling, making customer demand and access to financing central to the business. Most sales come from the United States, and recreational demand depends partly on customers' willingness and ability to spend on nonessential purchases.

  • BRP competes for Polaris's off-road and snowmobile buyers with Can-Am ATVs and side-by-sides, Ski-Doo snowmobiles and three-wheelers, selling through independent dealers and distributors. Watch its Ski-Doo model launches and pricing: Polaris says those factors heavily influence snowmobile market share.

  • Fox Factory supplies performance suspension for Polaris off-road vehicles and snowmobiles, so Polaris's production feeds demand for the components Fox sells to vehicle manufacturers.

  • Massimo Group sells work and recreational ATVs and utility vehicles to buyers also served by Polaris's Sportsman and RANGER lines. Its sales to farming, property-maintenance and outdoor-recreation users are the overlap to watch, rather than its wider vehicle portfolio.

  • Brunswick both competes for Polaris's recreational-boat buyers and supplies Mercury outboard engines for Polaris's pontoon boats, making it a rival in boat sales and a supplier in boat production.

  • MasterCraft Boat Holdings competes directly for Polaris's Bennington and Godfrey pontoon buyers through its Crest and Balise brands. Watch its Leisure segment results, which cover those pontoon brands, rather than treating all its boat sales as the same competitive signal.

  • Winnebago Industries competes for Polaris's Bennington and Godfrey boat buyers with Barletta pontoons; its RV sales also share Polaris's exposure to consumers' willingness to spend on recreational vehicles.

  • Malibu Boats sells recreational powerboats to buyers also considering Polaris's pontoon and deck boats. Its Cobalt luxury boats and Saxdor premium adventure dayboats are concrete product lines to watch for competition over recreational boating purchases.

  • THOR and Polaris both sell vehicles through dealers, leaving their sales exposed to recreational spending and dealer stocking decisions, even though THOR makes RVs rather than off-road vehicles. Watch orders from THOR's independent RV dealers for a read on that shared purchasing cycle.
