Company

Company overview

BRP serves riders seeking recreation on trails, roads, snow and water. Its Can-Am off-road vehicles, three-wheel vehicles and electric motorcycles generate most revenue. Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles and Sea-Doo watercraft and pontoons form the next-largest business. Parts, accessories and riding apparel support these vehicles after purchase; BRP also sells Rotax engines to other manufacturers and distributors.

Independent dealers and distributors buy BRP’s products for resale to riders, with dealers also providing repairs and warranty service. Most sales use third-party financing that funds dealers’ inventory purchases and lets BRP collect payment earlier. The business therefore depends on dealers selling through their stock and retaining access to financing. The United States supplies most revenue.

BRP adjusts production to orders from its distribution network, but it must build seasonal vehicles ahead of and early in their selling seasons. Long supply lead times limit its ability to respond when demand changes, and snowfall and summer weather affect sales. Safety, noise and emissions rules govern product design, while local restrictions can limit where and when riders may use its vehicles, including bans on recreational use in some locations.

BRP's results hinge on powersports demand and dealer inventories; Yamaha is another important rival to watch in ATVs, side-by-sides and alternatives to three-wheeled vehicles.

  • Polaris competes with BRP for buyers of ATVs, side-by-sides and snowmobiles, with both selling through independent dealers. Watch Polaris's Off Road results: that business covers these overlapping products, and many of its dealers also carry competing brands.

  • Massimo Group competes with parts of BRP's Can-Am and Sea-Doo range by selling ATVs, utility side-by-sides and pontoon boats. Its utility-vehicle sales offer a view of buyers using vehicles for agriculture, property maintenance and outdoor recreation, rather than recreation alone.

  • Harley-Davidson competes for road riders with BRP's Can-Am three-wheelers, while its LiveWire business competes with Can-Am electric motorcycles. Watch motorcycle revenue separately from financing revenue, and LiveWire's revenue for the electric-motorcycle overlap.

  • Malibu Boats, Inc. competes for recreational and fishing-boat buyers with BRP's Sea-Doo Switch pontoons and Quintrex boats. Its Saltwater Fishing segment is particularly relevant to Quintrex's fishing boats, which are used mainly in coastal and offshore salt water.

  • LiveWire Group, Inc. sells electric motorcycles to dealers and directly to riders, competing directly with Can-Am electric motorcycles—a small part of BRP's broader range. Watch its Electric Motorcycles segment rather than STACYC's electric bikes for a closer read on this competition.
