Company

Company overview

Most of MasterCraft Boat Holdings’ revenue comes from MasterCraft-brand boats built for water skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing. It also makes Crest and Balise pontoon boats for leisure boating. Its acquisition of Marine Products added Chaparral family-recreation boats and Robalo fishing boats, broadening the business beyond its core water-sports market.

Independent dealers buy the boats and sell them to recreational boaters. These dealers account for substantially all company sales, although no single dealer dominates revenue. Orders depend on how quickly dealers sell their inventory and whether they can finance further purchases. Consumers’ access to affordable boat financing also influences demand, so the company adjusts production and dealer inventories to retail sales.

The business also relies on outside engine suppliers. Ilmor Engineering supplies all MasterCraft engines and is the company’s largest supplier overall; Mercury Marine is the exclusive engine supplier for Balise. Boats and components must meet product-safety and engine-emissions standards to be sold in key markets.

MasterCraft's results hinge on recreational boat demand and dealer inventories, but also on Ilmor Engineering, its exclusive MasterCraft-brand engine supplier and largest overall supplier.

  • Malibu Boats competes with MasterCraft for watersports buyers and dealers through its Malibu and Axis wake boats; its fishing boats and Cobalt leisure boats also overlap with Robalo and Chaparral. Malibu and Axis sales are worth watching for signs of premium boat demand and dealer restocking that also matter to MasterCraft.

  • Brunswick both competes with MasterCraft for recreational boat buyers and supplies Mercury engines to its pontoon, Chaparral and Robalo brands. Watch Mercury supply news: it is Crest's largest engine supplier and Balise's exclusive supplier, and engines are MasterCraft's biggest boatbuilding component cost.

  • Winnebago Industries competes for MasterCraft's leisure-boat buyers through Barletta pontoons and Chris-Craft recreational boats, which rival Crest, Balise and Chaparral. Those boat brands, rather than Winnebago's RV business, are the relevant comparison for MasterCraft.

  • Polaris competes with MasterCraft's Crest and Balise for pontoon buyers through its Bennington and Godfrey brands. Keep that boat business separate when comparing results: powersports vehicles dominate Polaris's broader business.

  • Twin Vee PowerCats competes for the recreational fishing buyers served by MasterCraft's Robalo, offering Twin Vee twin-hull boats and Bahama single-hull boats. Those fishing boats are the relevant comparison for Robalo, rather than MasterCraft's wake boats or pontoons.
