PennyMac Financial Services, Inc. is a U.S. non-bank mortgage lender and servicer. Its largest revenue source is producing loans for sale: it mainly buys mortgages from other lenders, while also funding loans brought by brokers or borrowers directly. It earns origination fees, interest before sale and gains from selling loans. Most loans reach buyers through mortgage-backed securities issued by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac or guaranteed by Ginnie Mae, or are sold to PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust (PMT). Short-term borrowing funds loan purchases and originations, and sale proceeds repay that borrowing.
Servicing is its other major business. After selling a mortgage, PennyMac often keeps the right to collect payments, administer the loan and handle delinquencies, earning fees from borrower payments. It also performs these tasks for owners of servicing rights, which pay it service fees. PMT supplies most of this subservicing business, though servicing rights owned by PennyMac generate most servicing-fee income. When borrowers repay or refinance, the fees on the old loans end.
PMT is an important related-party partner in both businesses. PennyMac buys and processes loans for PMT; their agreement gives PMT exclusive rights to acquire conventional conforming loans from the correspondent activities covered by the agreement, generally limiting PennyMac's income on those loans to fulfillment fees.
The business depends on continued borrowing access and functioning markets for mortgage-backed securities. Interest rates affect demand for new loans and refinancing, as well as how long servicing fees last. PennyMac must maintain state licenses and agency approvals, including minimum capital and liquidity requirements, to conduct the relevant lending, loan-sale and servicing activities.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust buys loans from PFSI and pays its subsidiaries to produce loans, collect mortgage payments and manage investments; both also own rights to collect servicing fees. PMT and its subsidiaries supplied 9% of PFSI’s total net revenues in 2025, making PMT’s loan purchases and servicing portfolio worth watching for PFSI’s fee income.
Rocket Companies competes with PFSI for borrowers, loans submitted by brokers, loans bought from other lenders and the fees earned from managing mortgage payments. Watch Rocket’s lending volumes across its direct-to-consumer and partner channels for a read on demand in the markets where PFSI earns origination fees and loan-sale gains.
Rithm Capital Corp.’s Newrez competes with PFSI to originate home loans and earn fees managing borrowers’ payments. Rithm’s gains on loans originated and sold, and the value of retained rights to servicing fees, provide comparisons for those same earnings sources at PFSI.
UWM Holdings Corporation competes with PFSI’s broker-direct business to fund conventional and government mortgages submitted by independent brokers, then sell the loans. UWM works exclusively through brokers, so its lending volumes offer a focused comparison for demand in PFSI’s broker channel.
Onity Group Inc.’s PHH Mortgage competes with PFSI for fees from collecting payments and managing residential loans, including work done for other servicing-rights owners. Onity also originates loans to replenish its servicing portfolio; watch whether that portfolio grows, since PFSI likewise uses its serviced loans to find refinance and home-purchase borrowers.
Rithm Capital Corp. earningsRITM
Rithm Capital’s Newrez also originates and sells mortgages and manages borrowers’ payments, so its loan-sale gains and servicing-rights results offer a comparison for PennyMac Financial Services’ two income streams.
Read Rithm Capital’s gains from originating and selling loans alongside the results from servicing rights it retains. Strength in both would suggest that loan sales and mortgage servicing are each holding up; weakness in either would point to pressure on the corresponding production or servicing business at PennyMac Financial Services, but would not replace PFSI’s own results.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For PennyMac, the Fed’s policy rate shapes mortgage borrowing costs, which can shift demand for its loan production and change the prepayments that drive cash flows from mortgage servicing rights (MSRs).

If it comes in above expectations
Higher borrowing costs may weigh on loan demand and production revenue, while slower prepayments can support MSR cash flows and values.
If it comes in below expectations
Cheaper borrowing may support loan demand and production revenue, while faster prepayments can shorten MSR cash flows and weigh on their values.
PennyMac Financial Services, Inc. earningsThis company
PennyMac Financial Services earns from originating and selling loans and from servicing mortgages, and this report will show whether both businesses are supporting its results.
Read pretax income from loan production alongside net servicing fees, including the effect of mortgage-servicing-rights valuations and hedges. If both hold up or grow, originating and selling loans and managing mortgages are both contributing; if production income rises while servicing weakens as prepayments speed up, servicing rights run off, or valuations fall, results rely more on loan sales and less on servicing.
PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust earningsPMT
PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust buys loans from PennyMac Financial Services and pays it to produce loans and manage payments, so its report can show whether this important customer relationship still has business behind it.
Look at whether PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust’s loan purchases and serviced-loan portfolio hold steady or grow. Stable or rising activity would support the loan-production and servicing-fee relationship with PennyMac Financial Services; fewer purchases and a shrinking portfolio could mean less fee-generating business for PFSI. PMT and its subsidiaries accounted for 9% of PFSI’s total net revenues in 2025, but PMT’s report alone cannot establish how much fee income PFSI received.
Rocket Companies, Inc. earningsRKT
Rocket Companies also originates mortgages through consumer and partner channels, so its lending volume offers a read on borrower and channel demand facing PennyMac Financial Services.
Watch Rocket Companies’ lending volumes in its direct-to-consumer and partner channels. Strength in both would suggest borrowers and partners are still generating mortgage business, giving PennyMac Financial Services more loans to pursue while Rocket competes for them too; weaker volumes would point to fewer borrowers and loan opportunities in those markets.
