Company

Company overview

Old Republic International Corporation operates through insurance subsidiaries, with commercial insurance supplying most of its revenue. Businesses, public entities and other institutions pay it to cover property and liability losses; commercial auto is its largest coverage. Independent agents and brokers bring in most of this business. It collects premiums before the final cost of claims is known, sometimes years before payment, so earnings depend on pricing policies to cover claims and operating costs. It also earns significant interest and dividend income by investing insurance funds and the capital supporting the business.

Its other major business is title insurance. Property buyers and mortgage lenders pay a one-time premium at closing for protection against covered ownership defects, liens and other title problems. The business searches public records and provides escrow and closing services, with much of the customer charge paying for these services rather than the insured risk. Independent title agents produce most of this business and keep the major portion of the customer charge as commission, while Old Republic remains responsible for covered claims. Revenue depends closely on property sales and refinancing activity.

State regulators control rates for many of its insurance lines. The parent company relies on dividends and interest from subsidiaries to meet its cash needs, and insurance laws limit how much those subsidiaries can distribute without regulatory approval.

  • W.R. Berkley and Old Republic both collect premiums from businesses for insurance tailored to particular industries, exposing them to similar specialty-insurance pricing and claim-cost pressures. Berkley’s results in those specialized customer markets offer a comparison for Old Republic’s commercial insurance business.

  • American Financial Group’s Great American businesses compete with Old Republic for premiums from companies buying specialized property and liability coverage. Great American’s pricing and claims experience in these business policies provides a comparison for Old Republic’s specialty insurance results.

  • CNA Financial Corporation and Old Republic compete for business customers through agents and brokers, selling property and liability insurance, guarantees of customers’ obligations and warranty services. CNA’s commercial casualty pricing and claims experience are the relevant comparison for Old Republic, rather than its remaining life insurance operations.

  • Travelers competes with Old Republic for premiums from businesses and public institutions protecting their property and covering liability claims. Watch Travelers’ Business Insurance pricing and profitability: state approvals and competition affect how quickly it can raise rates, pressures Old Republic also faces.

  • RLI Corp. and Old Republic compete to insure commercial customers’ specialized property and liability risks and guarantee their obligations through surety policies. RLI’s results on individually tailored coverage offer a view of specialty claim costs, though some of its risks are higher than standard insurance risks.

  • First American and Old Republic depend on property sales and refinancing for fees from buyers and mortgage lenders: both check ownership records, insure against title defects and handle funds and closing paperwork. First American’s title premiums, earned when transactions close, are a useful comparison for Old Republic’s title revenue.

  • Fidelity National Financial competes with Old Republic to protect buyers’ and lenders’ property ownership interests and handle escrow funds in residential and commercial transactions. Watch its large commercial title policies for national lenders: commercial premiums made up 26% of Old Republic’s net title premiums earned in 2025.

  • Stewart Information Services Corporation competes with Old Republic to search ownership records, insure property titles and complete real estate closings for customers. Its news on large commercial customers and mortgage originators is especially relevant: those customers weigh insurers’ size and financial strength as well as price and service.

  • Hartford competes with Old Republic for premiums from businesses buying property and liability insurance. Its Business Insurance earned premiums—not its employee benefits or fund businesses—are the relevant revenue line to compare with Old Republic’s commercial underwriting.

  • Markel Group and Old Republic compete for commercial customers needing insurance tailored to specialized risks, where expertise and service matter alongside price. Markel Insurance’s profit from writing policies is the useful comparison for Old Republic’s specialty business, rather than Markel’s equity-investment swings or non-insurance operations.

  • Hanover competes with Old Republic for business customers buying commercial and specialty property and liability insurance through independent agents. Hanover’s Core Commercial and Specialty results show the business flowing through that shared sales channel; its personal policies are a less relevant comparison.

  • Chubb competes with Old Republic for commercial and specialty property and liability premiums, but its global business spans more types of insurance. Chubb’s pricing and risk selection in commercial coverage are more relevant to Old Republic than its life insurance earnings.

  • Arch Capital’s U.S. specialty insurers compete with Old Republic for premiums from commercial customers, writing both state-authorized policies and coverage outside those standard markets—admitted and non-admitted insurance. Those U.S. insurance results are the relevant comparison, rather than Arch’s worldwide reinsurance or mortgage insurance businesses.

  • Cincinnati Financial and Old Republic compete for business insurance premiums through independent agencies, but Cincinnati also writes substantial homeowner and personal auto business. Watch Cincinnati’s commercial-lines premiums and underwriting results for the closer comparison with Old Republic, which has no meaningful homeowner or private auto exposure.

  • AXIS Capital competes with Old Republic to insure commercial organizations against claims involving directors’ and officers’ conduct and professional mistakes—D&O and errors and omissions coverage. AXIS’s pricing and claims experience in these professional policies is a comparison for Old Republic’s financial indemnity coverage, not its much larger commercial auto business.
