Company

Company overview

Businesses hire Onterris, Inc. to meet environmental requirements, manage pollution and respond to environmental emergencies; government agencies also buy its services, but private-sector clients provide the vast majority of revenue. Its teams assess environmental conditions and help obtain permits, test air, water and soil, and design and carry out treatment of contaminated water and soil. It works at clients’ sites rather than owning the properties or their underlying environmental liabilities.

Clients pay fixed project prices or fees based on time and materials. Consulting, permitting and emergency response form the largest revenue stream, while testing and analysis and remediation each contribute a broadly comparable share. Most contracts allow clients to terminate work, typically with payment for costs incurred and fees already earned.

Environmental rules and public-health needs often make this spending necessary. Emergency-response work nevertheless varies with the occurrence and scale of incidents, and a large client supplies a significant share of revenue. The consulting and response business can depend heavily on a few customers during major emergencies. Much of Onterris’s work also requires company or professional licenses, permits and accreditations; losing these can prevent it from operating in the affected jurisdiction.

To gauge Onterris’s environmental compliance, contamination treatment and episodic emergency-response business, also watch testing competitors SGS, Eurofins and privately held Pace Analytical, which are absent from this list.

  • Tetra Tech competes with Onterris for government and commercial clients paying for environmental advice, contamination cleanup and water treatment. Watch its water and environmental work rather than its broader infrastructure business for the closest read on Onterris’s competitive landscape.

  • Exponent competes with Onterris for clients paying scientists to assess contamination, health risks from toxic substances and regulatory issues. Its Environmental and Health segment is the part to watch for this overlap, rather than its wider engineering consulting business.

  • AECOM competes with Onterris for public and private clients paying to clean up contamination and design the related engineering work. Watch whether its initial consulting assignments expand into larger environmental projects: AECOM can turn early advisory work into broader client engagements.

  • ICF International overlaps with Onterris in advising government and commercial clients on environmental work and carrying it out, including disaster recovery. Watch ICF’s disaster-recovery work for the closest comparison with Onterris’s emergency response and recovery services.
