Gartner helps executives and their teams make business and technology decisions. Enterprises pay for its Insights subscriptions, which give designated users access to proprietary research, data, benchmarks and tools, as well as direct advice from business and technology experts. Contracts cover a defined period and often run for multiple years; most customers pay in advance. These subscriptions account for most of Gartner’s revenue.
Gartner also earns fees from attendees and exhibitors at executive conferences, including Gartner Symposium/Xpo. Its consulting clients pay for custom analysis and hands-on support for technology initiatives, such as managing IT costs and choosing technology suppliers. Unlike subscriptions, consulting work is generally project-based rather than recurring.
The business depends chiefly on winning subscriptions and persuading existing clients to renew. That requires insights clients find useful, credible and timely, with advice they view as independent. Gartner serves a broad client base rather than relying on any single major customer.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Gartner’s results depend chiefly on enterprise demand for recurring independent research and advice, with IDC an important rival to watch beyond this list.
Forrester competes directly with Gartner for technology and business leaders’ spending on independent research subscriptions, advice, consulting and events. Watch Forrester’s news on pricing pressure and market-share loss for signs of competition in Gartner’s core research business.
TechTarget, Inc., which calls itself Informa TechTarget, competes with Gartner for technology intelligence customers through Omdia’s research and advice. Its news on Omdia’s analysis and analyst coverage is more relevant to Gartner’s research subscriptions for technology users and vendors than its marketing and sales services.
Accenture and Gartner both draw on enterprise spending on technology strategy and transformation: Accenture sells strategy and technology consulting that overlaps Gartner’s advice and custom analysis for senior executives. Watch Accenture’s consulting work rather than its managed services for the closer read on demand for Gartner Consulting.
Cognizant shares Gartner’s exposure to enterprise technology budgets, selling consulting and modernization services to enterprises that also buy Gartner’s technology strategy advice. Its work updating clients’ applications and systems offers a view of spending on the transformation projects Gartner advises executives on.
EPAM competes with Gartner in technology strategy advice and shares its exposure to enterprise transformation budgets, while also getting paid to build software and implement changes. Watch EPAM’s strategy-to-implementation work in cloud, data and AI for a view of the transformation spending behind Gartner’s advisory demand.
CGI competes with Gartner for enterprise and government spending on business and technology strategy advice, including Gartner’s work helping clients choose and source IT services. Watch CGI’s U.S. federal customer news around Momentum for context on a customer group that drove Gartner’s public-sector contract-value decline.
Forrester Research Inc earningsFORR
Forrester competes with Gartner for enterprise research subscriptions, and its report will show whether pricing and demand for those services are holding up.
Look at Forrester’s research revenue and customer retention, alongside any reported discounting or market-share losses. Steady revenue and retention without clear pricing pressure would suggest enterprises still pay for independent research, a supportive market for Gartner’s subscriptions; weakening figures alongside discounting or lost share would point to tougher competition for research contracts and make Gartner’s customer retention and pricing harder to defend.
Cognizant Technology Solutions earningsCTSH
Cognizant updates enterprise applications and systems, and its report will show whether clients are still funding transformation projects in the budget environment Gartner advises them on.
Focus on Cognizant’s demand and revenue for application modernization and systems-transformation work, not just its overall results, and compare that with changes in large-project bookings or backlog. Steady project demand and bookings would show enterprises continuing technology transformations, supporting the budget environment for Gartner’s strategy advice; weakening demand and bookings would suggest clients are delaying transformation spending, leaving Gartner’s advisory business in a more cautious spending climate.
Gartner, Inc. earningsThis company
Gartner earns most of its revenue from enterprise subscriptions to research and advice, and this report will show whether renewals and expanded purchases are growing its contract value.
Read year-over-year Insights contract-value growth alongside client retention and wallet retention, which measures existing clients’ purchases against their prior-year contract value. Rising contract value with steady retention would show renewals and expanded client purchases supporting the subscription business; slowing contract value or falling retention would show new contracts failing to fully replace lost or reduced subscriptions, weakening the base for Insights growth.
