Company overview

Forrester Research helps companies understand customer needs and make decisions about technology and business strategy. Its main service, Forrester Decisions, gives business and technology leaders online access to research, customer data, vendor evaluations and practical tools, with ongoing analyst support to apply them. Clients can also search its research using Forrester AI.

Companies pay subscriptions priced mainly by the number of licensed users, usually under annually renewable contracts and typically paid in advance. These research subscriptions generate most of Forrester’s revenue. Clients also pay fixed fees for consulting projects and advisory work, while event attendees and sponsors pay for its events. Consulting and events complement the subscription business.

The business depends on clients renewing subscriptions, expanding their purchases and finding its research credible, useful and timely as technology and markets change. Its client base is spread across many companies rather than relying heavily on one customer.

Forrester’s results hinge on enterprise research-subscription renewals and advisory budgets; IDC is another research rival to watch that is missing from this list.

  • Gartner competes directly with Forrester for business and technology leaders’ spending on proprietary research subscriptions, analyst advice, consulting and conferences. Watch Gartner’s efforts to increase client spending and pricing: Forrester warns that competition can pressure its prices and market share.

  • TechTarget, Inc. challenges Forrester on two fronts: its Intelligence & Advisory services compete in technology research, while its content services compete for technology vendors’ marketing budgets. Watch those vendors’ spending on Brand & Content, which overlaps with Forrester’s content-marketing work.

  • Accenture competes with Forrester’s consulting business for enterprises’ spending on strategy, digital transformation and customer-experience advice. Its consulting work is the relevant business to watch for this overlap, rather than the services it runs on clients’ behalf.
