Company

Company overview

HNI Corporation supplies businesses and government customers with furniture for their workplaces, including desks, seating, storage and furniture systems. This business generates most of its sales and includes Steelcase. Dealers and office-products distributors are the main buyers and sales channels, although HNI also sells directly to end users.

Its smaller residential business manufactures fireplaces, fireplace inserts and stoves for new homes and remodeling projects. It sells through independent dealers and distributors, alongside HNI-owned retail outlets and distribution businesses that also provide installation.

HNI relies on its dealer network to help customers select products, install them and provide after-sales service, but does not depend heavily on any single customer or dealer. Furniture demand depends partly on office use: reduced attendance under hybrid working has weighed on demand. The residential business depends on new-home construction and remodeling activity.

HNI Corporation depends mainly on workplace-furniture demand, where privately held Haworth and Teknion also compete, while its fireplace business relies on home construction and remodeling.

  • MillerKnoll competes with HNI Corporation for businesses’ and institutions’ purchases of seating, furniture systems and other workplace furniture. Watch MillerKnoll’s North America Contract and International Contract sales for clues to demand in the market where HNI faces significant price competition.

  • MasterBrand and HNI Corporation both depend on new-home construction and homeowners’ remodeling spending: MasterBrand sells residential cabinets through dealers, retailers and builders, while HNI sells fireplaces and stoves. Watch MasterBrand’s cabinet sales for signs of those budgets strengthening or weakening; HNI’s remodel/retrofit sales rose in fiscal 2025 while new-construction sales were flat.

  • Masco’s faucets, paint and other home-improvement products draw on the same homeowner renovation budgets as HNI Corporation’s fireplaces and stoves. Watch Masco’s Decorative Architectural Products sales, which normally strengthen in the second and third calendar quarters as repair and remodeling activity peaks.

  • Mohawk Industries shares two sources of demand with HNI Corporation: homeowners’ construction and remodeling spending supports flooring and fireplaces, while commercial interior spending supports flooring and workplace furniture. Watch Mohawk’s residential and commercial flooring sales for clues to spending across both sides of HNI’s business.

  • Builders FirstSource sells building materials and installation services to U.S. residential builders and remodelers whose projects also support demand for HNI Corporation’s fireplaces and stoves. Its sales to new-home and repair-and-remodel customers offer a read on the project activity behind HNI’s hearth business, rather than its workplace-furniture demand.

Agenda

todayTue, Oct 20

  1. 8:30 AMET pre-market

    Housing Starts (Sep)

HNI’s Residential Building Products sells fireplaces and related products to homebuilders, so measures of new-home building and sales indicate whether builders may buy more or fewer products for new construction.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

HNI’s $1.3 billion of debt makes Fed rate decisions relevant because higher rates can raise interest costs on debt that reprices or new borrowing and reduce earnings, while lower rates can ease those costs.
