Company

Company overview

MillerKnoll supplies chairs, desks, furniture systems and furnishings for workplaces, healthcare facilities, schools and homes, with brands including Herman Miller and Knoll. Most revenue comes from furniture sold for organizational use, with North America the largest business. Home furnishings retail is a substantial second business, reaching consumers through Design Within Reach and other owned stores and websites, as well as independent retailers.

Independent dealers generate most sales: they buy furniture from MillerKnoll, resell it to end customers and often handle installation. MillerKnoll also sells directly to businesses, government organizations and consumers. The company depends on its dealer network, but no single dealer or end customer accounts for a dominant share of sales.

Organizational demand depends on office construction, occupancy and customers’ business conditions, while retail demand depends on consumer spending and housing conditions. MillerKnoll largely assembles furniture from purchased components, producing contract furniture to order, so fulfilling orders depends on timely supplier deliveries. Material prices and tariffs affect what it costs to make those products.

MillerKnoll’s results hinge mainly on furniture demand from business and institutional buyers, where privately held Haworth is a significant rival, alongside consumer spending on premium home furnishings.

  • HNI Corporation, including Steelcase, competes with MillerKnoll to supply workplace seating and furniture systems, tying both to business spending on offices. Watch HNI’s workplace furnishings sales rather than its fireplace business for a read on MillerKnoll’s business-furniture market.

  • Arhaus, Inc. competes with MillerKnoll’s retail brands for premium furniture purchases by consumers and interior-design professionals. Its furniture sales through showrooms, online and catalogs offer a read on spending by the affluent households both seek.

  • Williams-Sonoma, Inc. competes with MillerKnoll’s retail brands for consumers buying high-quality furniture and home furnishings. Sales at home brands such as Pottery Barn and West Elm help gauge demand for the design-led furnishings MillerKnoll sells.

  • Wayfair’s furniture retail platform and specialty brands compete with MillerKnoll’s retail channels for home-furnishing purchases. Watch furniture demand at AllModern, Joss & Main and Perigold, while remembering that Wayfair also sells housewares and home-improvement products across a wider range of budgets.

  • Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc. competes with MillerKnoll’s residential retail business for consumers buying quality furniture, though their styles and price ranges differ. Its residential furniture sales offer another view of spending by relatively affluent households, rather than demand from MillerKnoll’s office customers.
