Company

Company overview

Getty Images supplies images and video that companies, advertising agencies and media outlets use in commercial projects and reporting. Content cleared for commercial use brings in most revenue; news, sports and entertainment coverage and archive imagery form the other major business. Corporate customers are its largest source of revenue.

Customers pay for individual licenses or subscriptions. Annual subscriptions account for most revenue, making renewals of Getty Images Premium Access and iStock subscriptions important to the business. Getty Images serves premium buyers, while iStock offers lower-priced content mainly to small and medium-sized businesses. Unsplash combines free downloads with its paid Unsplash+ offering. The company also provides custom shoots and generative-AI image services, and licenses content and metadata for AI development.

Most revenue comes from content licensed from outside creators and partners, who receive royalties when their work is licensed. Exclusive content supplies most revenue, so the business depends on maintaining those relationships and the rights to distribute their work, as well as retaining subscribers. It does not depend heavily on any single customer or content supplier.

Contractual restrictions limit direct-to-consumer sales under the Getty Images trademarks and require consent from Getty Investments to sell, transfer or pledge those marks.

Getty Images depends on demand for paid visual content, with Adobe Stock and Canva competing in creative content and the Associated Press in editorial coverage—key rivals missing from this list.

  • SHUTTERSTOCK, INC. competes with Getty Images to license stock images, video and music to creative customers, while their proposed merger makes regulatory and deal news matter to both. Watch its Content revenue for demand for licensed creative assets, and merger reviews for whether the deal can proceed.

  • Thomson Reuters competes with Getty Images through Reuters, which licenses news images and video to media customers. Watch Reuters rather than the group's overall results: professional information and software subscriptions dominate the broader business, while Reuters overlaps with Getty Images' editorial offering.

  • Veritone, Inc. competes with Getty Images by licensing content and representing content owners for media, entertainment, sports and advertising customers. Its Managed Services revenue covers this business and is more relevant to Getty Images than its main software business.

  • Fiverr International Ltd. gives business buyers an alternative to Getty Images' licensed creative assets and commissioned custom content: hiring freelancers through its marketplace. Buyers compare and purchase services with a defined scope, delivery time and price, so the overlap is in businesses' choice between buying existing content and commissioning work.
