Shutterstock connects customers who need creative material, mainly for commercial use, with contributors who supply images, video, music and 3D models. Customers find content on its platform and pay through subscriptions or individual license purchases; sales teams arrange licenses for more specialized needs. Content licensing supplies most revenue, and Shutterstock typically pays contributors a royalty whenever their work is licensed. Most licenses let customers keep using the material without further royalties, and the same work can be licensed to multiple customers.
A smaller business licenses information describing its content—metadata—to technology and media companies and start-ups, including for machine-learning and generative-AI training. Shutterstock also earns revenue from Giphy distribution and advertising services and from custom production through Shutterstock Studios.
The business depends on keeping both paying customers and contributors engaged: most revenue comes from customers who have bought before, while content breadth and search quality help customers find material they want. Licensing also depends on contributors having the necessary rights and releases; Shutterstock reviews submissions but cannot guarantee those rights. The company is under an FTC investigation into subscription disclosures, enrollment and cancellation practices, whose resolution could require changes to how it operates.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Shutterstock’s results hinge on paid creative-content demand and AI-training data sales, with Adobe Stock and Canva important competing alternatives missing from this list.
Getty Images and Shutterstock compete to license images, video and music to overlapping creative and media buyers; their proposed merger also ties their share-price news to regulatory decisions. Watch the merger reviews: regulators could block the deal or delay its closing.
Veritone competes with Shutterstock for commercial customers paying to use media content, particularly in North America, but most of Veritone’s revenue comes from software sold to businesses and public-sector customers. Its content-licensing, representation and related services revenue—not its overall software results—is the line to watch for this rivalry.
Fiverr International Ltd. competes for the business content-production budgets that Shutterstock serves through stock-content licenses and Shutterstock Studios’ custom production. Fiverr lets buyers compare and purchase freelancers’ services with a defined scope, duration and price, making demand for those creative services the part of its marketplace to watch.
Fiverr International Ltd. earningsFVRR
Fiverr’s report will show whether buyers are spending on freelancers’ creative services, which compete for some of the same budgets as Shutterstock Studios’ custom production.
Focus on demand for creative services on Fiverr’s marketplace, not its overall results as a stand-in for content-licensing demand. Continued purchases of freelancers’ services would show that some business creative budgets are still being spent, but would not prove that buyers are taking more Shutterstock licenses. Weaker demand would point to tighter budgets for both custom production and content purchases.
SHUTTERSTOCK, INC. earningsThis company
Shutterstock’s report will show how its content licensing and its data, distribution and services businesses each contribute to revenue and operating income.
Read revenue from Content alongside revenue from Data, Distribution, and Services, then check operating income. If Content holds up, the other business keeps growing, and operating income rises, growth is coming from more than acquisitions or newer offerings and is reaching profit. If Content weakens, growth rests mainly on the other business, and operating income does not keep pace, the core licensing business is under pressure and the newer growth is not yet broadening profits.
Getty Images Holdings, Inc. earningsGETY
Getty Images’ report will show how its image, video, and music licensing business is faring with buyers it shares with Shutterstock.
Compare Getty Images’ licensing business with the direction of Shutterstock’s Content business. If both hold up or grow, buyers are still spending on this kind of content, but that does not show either company taking share from the other. If Getty weakens while Shutterstock Content holds up, Shutterstock is proving more resilient with its own customers; if both weaken, licensing demand is under broader pressure.
