Futu edged up 0.02% and held up better than its brokerage peers, but it remains in the group’s pullback. The expanded options trading hours have yet to establish a company-driven recovery.

Company overview

Futu Holdings Limited helps individual investors trade stocks, options and other investments through Futubull and its international platform, Moomoo. It executes and settles clients’ trades and charges commissions and handling fees. These fees and interest income together account for most of its revenue.

Clients can also borrow money to buy securities or borrow securities to sell short, paying Futu interest. Futu earns additional interest by placing clients’ uninvested cash with partner banks. It distributes wealth-management products through Money Plus, earning a smaller revenue contribution that includes a share of fund managers’ fees.

The business depends on clients keeping assets on its platforms and trading actively. Interest earnings also depend on borrowing demand, client cash balances and interest rates, while lending requires funding partners willing to provide money at a reasonable cost. Futu operates through locally licensed or registered entities, but has no Mainland China securities-brokerage or fund-sales license. Following regulatory inquiries into its cross-border services, it removed Futubull from Mainland China app stores and undertook rectification measures; further regulatory action could restrict those operations.

  • UP Fintech competes with Futu for retail investors buying and selling global securities online, and both earn commissions from client trading. Watch UP Fintech’s trading volume and commission discounts for signs of competition for those investors’ orders.

  • Interactive Brokers competes with Futu for individual investors seeking low-cost global trading and loans to fund securities purchases. Its commission-free U.S. stock and ETF trading for participating U.S. customers is a concrete pricing benchmark for Futu’s brokerage offering.

  • Webull competes with Futu’s Moomoo for mobile-first retail investors trading U.S. and Hong Kong securities in overlapping international markets. Watch its pricing: in the U.S., market makers and exchange partners pay Webull to route customer orders rather than customers paying brokerage commissions; outside the U.S., it typically charges retail clients directly.

  • Robinhood competes with Futu’s Moomoo for U.S. investors who make their own stock, options and cryptocurrency trades.

  • eToro Group Ltd. competes with Futu for self-directed investors using online platforms that combine multi-asset trading with investor communities. Watch engagement with its community and CopyTrader, which lets users copy another investor’s trades: these offer a different way to keep investors involved than Futu’s discussion-based community.

  • Charles Schwab competes with Futu for self-directed investors’ brokerage assets, earning revenue from trading, investment services and interest on client cash. Its net interest revenue is worth watching alongside Futu’s income from placing clients’ idle U.S. dollars in bank accounts and retaining the interest left after client payments and fees.

  • TOP Financial Group Limited competes with Futu for Asian clients paying for online access to local and overseas stocks, futures and options. Its push to attract Southeast Asian investors is the part to watch for competition with Futu’s brokerage expansion in the region.
