Company overview

Companies, investors, lenders and law firms hire FTI Consulting to handle problems such as a troubled business, an acquisition or a legal dispute. Corporate Finance is its largest revenue source: its professionals advise on transactions, improve operations and help restructure struggling businesses. Investigations, litigation support and economic analysis also contribute substantial revenue. This work includes examining evidence and providing expert testimony, with subsidiary Compass Lexecon analyzing economic issues such as competition and damages. FTI also helps clients manage electronic evidence and communications around these matters.

Clients pay mainly at agreed hourly rates for professionals’ work, with some engagements priced at fixed fees or including fees tied to successful outcomes. Law firms both hire FTI directly and bring it into work for their clients. Senior professionals’ relationships, referrals and reputation from previous assignments help generate new engagements; no single client dominates revenue.

The business depends on keeping specialized professionals working on paid assignments and matching staffing to demand as transactions, restructurings and disputes begin or end. Clients can generally terminate engagements without penalty. Conflicts also limit which work FTI can accept: it generally does not represent opposing parties in the same matter, and U.S. bankruptcy rules generally prevent it from representing both a debtor and its creditors in the same proceeding.

  • Exponent and FTI Consulting compete for fees from corporate clients seeking independent experts on construction, environmental and technical disputes in legal proceedings. Watch Exponent’s construction and environmental work for signs of demand for the expertise FTI sells to companies and law firms.

  • Huron and FTI Consulting compete to help healthcare and commercial organizations tackle management, transformation and data challenges. Huron’s healthcare revenue is worth watching for this overlap: it supplied 50% of revenue before reimbursable expenses in 2025.

  • Public Policy Holding Company, Inc. competes directly with FTI Consulting’s Strategic Communications business for clients paying for government relations, corporate reputation, crisis and investor communications. Its Corporate Communications & Public Affairs Consulting business is a place to watch demand for the communications advice FTI also sells.

  • Accenture competes with FTI Consulting for companies’ spending on strategy and business transformation advice, but its technology work and services that run operations for clients are much broader. Watch its consulting work rather than its whole business when assessing demand relevant to FTI’s transformation advice.

  • CBIZ, Inc. competes with FTI Consulting for financial advisory and healthcare consulting work, but its dominant accounting and tax services make it a less direct comparison. Watch its financial advice to middle-market businesses and government healthcare consulting rather than treating all CBIZ revenue as a signal for FTI.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

For FTI Consulting, the Fed’s policy-rate decision matters because it can change interest costs on the company’s variable-rate Credit Facility borrowing, which reduces or preserves cash available for its professional-services business.
