Company

Company overview

Most of Element Solutions Inc.’s revenue comes from electronics manufacturers. Its MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions business supplies chemicals that help form conductive pathways on circuit boards and chips, plus soldering and attachment materials that connect electronic components. Customers use these products in making hardware for computers, communications equipment, data centers and vehicles. Its smaller Element Specialties business mainly supplies chemicals that protect or decorate metal and plastic surfaces, alongside hydraulic control fluids for offshore energy production and drilling.

Manufacturers pay for these products directly or through intermediaries. Because production consumes the chemicals and materials, customers must replenish them to keep operating. Element Solutions also provides technical support to help customers use its formulations and optimize their processes. The products typically account for a small part of customers’ costs but are integral to finished-product performance.

The business depends on customers’ production activity and on keeping its formulations suited to changing manufacturing requirements. Working with equipment makers to secure approval or specification of its technologies helps sustain customer relationships; changing suppliers can be difficult. The customer base is diverse, with no material dependence on any single buyer. Chemical safety and environmental rules govern what it can manufacture and sell, and compliance can require reformulating or discontinuing products.

Moat

ESI says it has a moat. Does it hold up?

Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

Element Solutions depends chiefly on electronics manufacturing volumes and materials innovation; Henkel and Senju Metal Industry are also significant electronics competitors to watch outside this list.

  • MKS competes directly with Element Solutions for electronics manufacturers’ spending on specialty process chemicals. Watch its chemistry business rather than its broader equipment sales for developments in the materials used to manufacture electronic circuitry.

  • Qnity Electronics competes with Element Solutions to supply materials that chip and electronics manufacturers consume in production or build into devices. Its advanced-packaging and electronics-interconnect materials are the businesses to watch for competition with Element Solutions’ semiconductor and circuitry offerings.

  • Quaker Houghton competes with Element Solutions for industrial manufacturers’ spending on formulated chemicals and process fluids, rather than electronics materials. Its automotive and industrial process-fluid business is the relevant area to watch alongside Element Solutions’ metal- and plastic-finishing chemicals and lubricants.

  • Entegris and Element Solutions both sell process chemicals and materials to chip manufacturers and advanced-packaging customers. Watch Entegris’ Materials Solutions business, which supplies materials for depositing, polishing, etching and cleaning chips, rather than treating all its filtration and purity-control sales as comparable.

  • Amkor’s chip-packaging activity offers a read on demand for the types of wafer-plating and advanced-packaging materials Element Solutions sells, without establishing a supplier relationship. Amkor earns fees for packaging and testing chips for chip companies and foundries; watch its Advanced Products sales for the shift toward more advanced packaging.

  • Rogers and Element Solutions both depend on demand for high-performance circuitry: Rogers sells circuit and ceramic substrate materials, while Element Solutions sells the chemicals and assembly materials used to make electronic circuits. Rogers’ AES circuit-material and ceramic-substrate sales are the relevant lines to watch, rather than its broader engineered-materials business.

  • SCHMID Group N.V. sells circuit-board and substrate manufacturing equipment, while Element Solutions sells chemicals consumed in adding metal and treating surfaces in those processes, tying both to production and technology upgrades. Watch SCHMID’s electronics-equipment sales for manufacturers’ investment in advanced boards and substrates, distinct from Element Solutions’ ongoing chemical sales.

  2. 8:30 AMET pre-market

    Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)

Element Solutions’ electronics and surface-treatment chemicals are used in making computers, cars and aerospace equipment, so durable-goods orders matter because stronger customer production can lift replenishment sales while weaker production can reduce them.

    Industrial Production MoM (Oct)

Element Solutions’ chemicals are consumed and replenished in customers’ manufacturing, including electronics production, so factory output matters because more production can increase product use and sales, while less can reduce them.
