Company

Company overview

Eagle Bancorp is a bank holding company whose principal subsidiary, EagleBank, serves businesses and individuals in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. It gathers customer deposits and uses them to fund loans for business operations, property purchases and construction. Borrowers pay interest, and the bank also earns interest on securities and other investments. Most revenue comes from the interest left after paying depositors and other funding providers.

Commercial real estate is the largest part of its loan portfolio, while consumer lending is much smaller. Repayment depends heavily on local businesses and on the operation, sale or development of properties in the Washington area. Retaining deposits at manageable rates also matters: higher funding costs narrow the difference between what the bank earns and pays.

Banking rules limit its lending, investments and distributions and require capital and liquidity. Its commercial real estate concentration may require it to hold additional capital.

  • United Bankshares Inc, through United Bank, competes with Eagle Bancorp’s EagleBank for business borrowers, commercial property financing and deposits in the Washington metropolitan area.

  • Eagle Financial Services Inc, through Bank of Clarke, competes with Eagle Bancorp’s EagleBank for commercial borrowers and deposits in Northern Virginia and nearby Maryland. Its business deposit services, including electronic payments and remote check deposits, are worth watching alongside commercial lending for signs of competition for those customer relationships.

  • Shore Bancshares Inc, through Shore United Bank, serves overlapping business customers with Eagle Bancorp’s EagleBank in Maryland and Virginia. Both offer business loans, deposit accounts and services that help companies manage cash, so Shore’s commercial banking business is the part to watch for competition with Eagle.

  • Fulton Financial Corp competes with Eagle Bancorp for small-business deposits, commercial loans and construction financing in Maryland and Virginia. Fulton Bank’s lending to small and medium-sized businesses is the business to watch against Eagle’s focus on relationship-based commercial lending.

  • Equity Bancshares, Inc. and Eagle Bancorp both rely heavily on lending against commercial property, leaving both exposed when property borrowers struggle to repay or face higher refinancing costs. Commercial real estate accounted for 53.0% of Equity’s loans at December 31, 2025; credit deterioration in that portfolio is worth watching as a comparison for Eagle, though Equity lends in different states.

  • Dime Commercial Bancshares, Inc. and Eagle Bancorp both make substantial loans against commercial property, so property borrowers’ refinancing stress matters to both even though they serve different metropolitan markets.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Fed’s rate decision signals how borrowing rates may change; at EagleBank, that can alter what the bank earns on repricing loans and pays depositors, changing the gap that drives net interest income.
