Company overview

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc focuses on medicines used in hospital acute care, gastroenterology and oncology. Most revenue comes from Sancuso, a patch for chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting; Kristalose, a prescription powder for constipation; and Vibativ, an injectable antibiotic for certain bacterial infections.

Its sales teams promote medicines to prescribers, but pharmaceutical wholesalers are its main paying customers. These wholesalers supply hospitals, clinics and retail pharmacies. A small group of customers accounts for most revenue, making their purchases important to the business. Cumberland uses Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions exclusively for U.S. warehousing, shipping and related customer logistics.

Cumberland does not manufacture its medicines, so sales also depend on outside manufacturers supplying products that meet FDA requirements. Acetadote relies on a single manufacturer. Vaprisol is currently unavailable; Cumberland plans to seek approval to manufacture it at a new facility after its manufacturing partner resolves FDA inspection and warning-letter issues. Its ifetroban development candidates are not approved for marketing, so they remain separate from the approved medicines that generate current product sales.

Cumberland’s current sales depend more on established brands than on IPF drug development, making privately held PAI Pharma’s generic crystalline lactulose the competitor to watch for pressure on its large Kristalose business.

  • Redhill Biopharma Ltd. and Cumberland share equally in U.S. net revenues from Talicia, a prescription treatment for adults with H. pylori infection; Cumberland handles distribution and sales, while RedHill’s benefit flows through Talicia Holdings. Watch Talicia prescriptions and reimbursement coverage, which affect the sales Cumberland records.

  • United Therapeutics Corp’s Nebulized Tyvaso development competes for the same future IPF treatment market as Cumberland’s Phase II ifetroban, rather than its existing branded-drug sales. United Therapeutics already sells pulmonary hypertension medicines; its TETON trial results will determine whether it seeks approval to treat IPF with Nebulized Tyvaso.

  • Avalyn Pharma Inc.’s AP01 and AP02 compete with Cumberland’s investigational ifetroban in pulmonary fibrosis, but Avalyn depends heavily on those candidates and has no approved products or product sales. Watch AP01’s Phase 2b results in progressive pulmonary fibrosis and AP02’s Phase 2 results in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for progress from these potential rivals.

  • GRI Bio, Inc.’s oral GRI-0621 targets the same future IPF patient market as Cumberland’s Phase II ifetroban, not Cumberland’s current prescription-drug sales. GRI Bio needs successful development, approval and commercialization before earning product revenue, so GRI-0621’s clinical results are the news to watch for this competing treatment.
