Company

Company overview

Most of Cohen & Company Inc’s revenue comes from its Capital Markets business, especially investment banking and new securities issues. Through CCM, a division of Cohen Securities, it advises companies, financial sponsors and institutions and arranges or underwrites fundraising transactions. It also originates assets for investment vehicles it manages. Revenue depends on a limited number of engagements reaching completion. Clients sometimes pay with shares or other financial instruments rather than cash; their value can change, and restrictions or thin trading can delay conversion into cash.

Cohen Securities also executes securities trades for institutional investors, mortgage originators and smaller brokers. It finances mortgage originators against pools of newly issued mortgages, using that collateral to borrow from financial institutions. It earns the difference between borrowing and lending rates, or a borrower-paid fee when arranging financing directly between the parties. Its mortgage business depends heavily on U.S. mortgage-origination volumes. A small number of customers can account for a substantial share of Capital Markets revenue without committing to keep using its services.

The company’s smaller asset-management business earns fees based on managed assets and investment performance. Its portfolios are mainly fixed income; PriDe Funds, for example, buy debt from smaller European and Bermudian insurers. Separately, Cohen & Company Inc invests its own capital for investment returns, including in acquisition-shell companies known as SPACs and businesses that have merged with them.

The broker-dealer relies on Pershing LLC for clearing and support services and obtains all its margin financing from Pershing. Regulatory minimum-capital rules limit capital-intensive activities and withdrawals from regulated subsidiaries, restricting how much cash can move to the parent company.

  • Jefferies overlaps with Cohen & Company Inc in helping companies raise money and executing bond trades for institutions; both also manage alternative investments and invest their own capital. Watch Jefferies’ investment-banking and fixed-income results as a comparison for Cohen’s capital-markets business, rather than treating its investment gains as fee revenue.

  • Piper Sandler competes with Cohen & Company Inc for fees from advising companies and financial sponsors, raising capital and executing institutional bond trades. Its corporate advisory and financing revenue offers a comparison for Cohen’s deal revenue, which is generally booked only when transactions close.

  • Silvia is the supplied entry representing ProCap, whose merger with a Cohen-sponsored blank-check acquisition company left Cohen & Company Inc holding an investment that generated a $31.788 million fair-value gain in 2025. ProCap earns advertising and sponsorship revenue from media and holds Bitcoin as its main treasury reserve asset; for Cohen, watch the value of that investment rather than just ProCap’s media sales.

  • Goldman Sachs competes with Cohen & Company Inc for corporate and institutional clients paying for advice, securities issuance, bond trading and financing against securities. Goldman’s advisory and underwriting fees and fixed-income trading and financing revenue are the relevant comparisons for Cohen, not its card business.

  • Stifel Financial Corp.’s Institutional Group competes with Cohen & Company Inc to help corporations raise money and to execute bond trades for institutional investors. Its investment-banking and institutional fixed-income results provide a closer comparison for Cohen than Stifel’s private-client business.

  • Morgan Stanley overlaps with Cohen & Company Inc in executing trades for institutions, helping clients raise capital and managing investments for fees. Its much larger wealth-management operation makes the whole firm a less direct comparison; focus on its institutional securities and investment-management businesses.

  • Oppenheimer Holdings, Inc. competes with Cohen & Company Inc for companies’ paid investment-banking assignments and institutions’ securities business. Its substantial private-client operation makes its overall results a less direct comparison for Cohen.

  • Raymond James competes with Cohen & Company Inc in advising companies, arranging securities issuance and trading debt securities for clients. Watch those advisory, underwriting and debt-trading revenues when comparing it with Cohen, since Raymond James also has extensive businesses serving individual customers.
