Chord Energy Corporation drills and operates oil and gas wells, mainly in the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana. Refiners, marketers and other buyers pay for its production, with crude oil providing most of its revenue and natural gas liquids and natural gas contributing much less. It also buys and resells oil and gas to make better use of transportation, meet pipeline specifications or cover production shortfalls.
Chord manages sales itself, generally at market-based prices adjusted for regional conditions and transportation costs. Phillips 66 Company and Marathon Petroleum Supply & Trading LLC are significant customers, though Chord says alternative buyers and markets are available if it loses any one customer. Getting production to buyers relies heavily on a limited number of providers that gather, transport and process it.
The business depends on commodity prices, access to transportation and the cost of developing wells. Existing wells produce less over time, so Chord must develop, find or acquire reserves to replace what it extracts. Its concentrated operations also depend on regional infrastructure and on complying with environmental requirements, including permits governing water use and wastewater disposal.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Chord’s results hinge on crude oil prices and Williston Basin well economics, but also watch Phillips 66, absent from this list, which bought approximately 21% of its product sales in 2025.
Northern Oil and Gas shares Chord’s exposure to Williston oil prices and well returns, but pays for a share of wells run by others while Chord mainly runs its own production there. Watch the well proposals Northern receives and chooses to fund: it says lower oil prices typically reduce both.
Devon competes with Chord in producing and selling oil, gas and natural gas liquids from U.S. onshore fields, including the Williston Basin. Its Williston results offer a closer comparison for Chord than its company-wide figures, since Devon’s largest and most active program is in the Delaware Basin and most sales track market prices.
Diamondback and Chord both turn concentrated acreage they largely operate into oil-driven cash flow using horizontal wells and shared production facilities. Diamondback’s Permian drilling costs and development pace offer a comparison for Chord’s Williston model, rather than a read on the same basin.
Permian Resources and Chord both sell oil, natural gas liquids and gas at market-sensitive prices from concentrated basin holdings, so commodity prices reach both companies’ revenue. Watch Permian Resources’ selling prices in the Delaware Basin: most contracts last more than a year, but generally do not lock in prices.
SM Energy shares Chord’s oil-heavy revenue exposure: both develop U.S. onshore oil and gas fields and earn most production revenue from oil. Oil supplied 82% of SM Energy’s production revenue in 2025, but its revenue growth mainly reflected a full year from acquired Uinta assets, not just commodity prices.
Crescent Energy and Chord rely on cash from oil, gas and natural gas liquids to fund acquisitions and drilling, so weaker commodity prices constrain both. Watch Crescent’s spending needed to maintain production: it says its lower-decline wells require relatively modest reinvestment.
EOG Resources and Chord both produce and sell oil, natural gas liquids and gas, with cash flow depending on commodity prices and efficient development. Watch EOG’s drilling costs and well payback periods as a comparison for how much cash Chord can retain from developing its acreage.
Ovintiv and Chord both sell oil, natural gas liquids and gas and adjust development spending through commodity cycles. Ovintiv’s spending choices across the Permian and Montney show a broader, multi-product response to prices than Chord’s mainly Williston production.
Matador Resources and Chord both depend on returns from oil-rich wells, but Matador develops the Delaware Basin while Chord focuses on the Williston. Watch Matador’s Delaware drilling and completion spending, where it directed most of its effort and capital in 2025, rather than treating its gas-processing service revenue as comparable to Chord’s oil sales.
Magnolia Oil & Gas and Chord both earn cash by producing and selling onshore oil, gas and natural gas liquids, then reinvest in their acreage. Watch how much cash Magnolia retains after drilling and completing South Texas wells: its plan is to spend well within cash flow, providing a comparison for Chord’s reinvestment demands.
Chord pays Summit Midstream to collect crude oil and water produced with it through the Polar and Divide system under long-term agreements that commit production from specified acreage to that system. Watch this system’s volumes and service news: it connects Chord’s oil to pipeline and rail outlets and sends produced water to disposal facilities.
Marathon Petroleum is a significant buyer for Chord: its supply and trading subsidiary accounted for approximately 12% of Chord’s product sales in 2025. Marathon refines crude into products sold to retailers and wholesale customers, so watch its refining operations and purchasing news rather than expecting its earnings to move with Chord’s oil-production earnings.
ConocoPhillips and Chord both sell production at prevailing commodity prices, so oil-price cycles affect both. Watch ConocoPhillips’ realized crude prices, which reflect location, quality and transportation adjustments as well as market benchmarks, rather than its worldwide production totals.
Occidental and Chord both sell substantial oil production and develop U.S. fields whose returns depend on hydrocarbon prices. Occidental’s conventional and unconventional development costs offer a comparison for Chord’s well economics, though its recovery methods also include water, CO2 and steam injection.
California Resources shares Chord’s oil-driven production revenue exposure, despite producing in California and Utah rather than mainly the Williston Basin. Watch its oil sales and field costs; oil represented 79% of its 2025 net production, not 79% of revenue.
APA and Chord both produce oil, gas and natural gas liquids, with U.S. basin development supplying commodity-sensitive cash flow. Watch APA’s Permian drilling and completion costs: its largest source of production and cash flow offers a comparison for Chord’s cost control in the Williston.
Canadian Natural and Chord both earn revenue from oil sales, so North American crude prices matter to both, but Canadian Natural’s oil sands and heavy oil differ substantially from Chord’s Bakken production. Its oil-product mix makes it a price-cycle comparison rather than a close guide to Chord’s drilling returns.
Chord Energy Corporation earningsThis company
Chord Energy's report shows whether Williston production and realized prices generate enough cash after field costs to support drilling.
Compare oil volumes sold and realized prices, after regional price differences and transport costs, with lease operating cost per barrel of oil equivalent, operating cash flow and capital spending. Stronger volumes or prices with controlled costs and cash flow covering investment would show that Chord Energy can fund development from its operations; weaker prices or volumes, higher costs, or cash flow below investment would leave less cash for development.
MARATHON PETROLEUM CORPORATION earningsMPC
Marathon Petroleum's refining operations and purchasing news show whether this significant buyer continues to demand Chord Energy's products.
Watch Marathon Petroleum's refinery operations and crude purchasing: its supply and trading subsidiary accounted for about 12% of Chord Energy's product sales in 2025. Steady operations and continued buying would show that this buyer is still taking product; disruptions or reduced buying could leave Chord Energy needing to place more product with other buyers and could pressure sales terms. Chord says it has alternative markets and pipeline connections, so a change at one buyer does not mean it has lost its outlets.
Devon Energy Corporation earningsDVN
Devon Energy's Williston results offer a close read on whether oil prices and development conditions in Chord Energy's main basin are supportive.
Compare Devon Energy's Williston realized oil prices and production; realized prices reflect the market benchmark as well as regional price differences and transport. Steady prices with controlled production costs would suggest that market and development conditions in the basin are supporting producers. Weaker prices, or rising output alongside signs of local supply or transportation pressure, could point to similar headwinds for Chord Energy's oil sales. The companies' assets differ, so Devon's results are a regional comparison, not a measure of Chord's own performance.
Summit Midstream Corporation earningsSMC
Summit Midstream's Polar and Divide systems gather Chord Energy's crude oil and produced water, so their operating updates show whether those routes and services are working smoothly.
Watch Summit Midstream's reported volumes and service updates for the relevant systems. Steady operations would indicate that the services Chord Energy uses to reach pipeline and rail markets and handle produced water are functioning; interruptions or capacity limits could hinder oil movement and complicate or raise the cost of water handling. System-wide figures may not identify Chord's share, but they can show whether this infrastructure route is reliable.
