Company

Company overview

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. helps utilities, industrial companies and municipalities generate steam and control emissions. Most revenue comes from supplying boilers and related energy and environmental equipment, then providing replacement parts, maintenance and upgrades. It services both its own equipment and other manufacturers’ equipment. Parts are its largest revenue line, alongside equipment projects and construction work.

Customers pay under contracts through advances, progress payments and final payments. Some contracts set a fixed price, making earnings depend on completing the work within estimated costs. The company also needs access to bank guarantees and surety bonds that assure customers it will meet its obligations; without sufficient capacity, it may be unable to bid for or carry out contracts.

Demand depends heavily on power generators’ and steam-using industries’ spending on plants, maintenance and environmental compliance. One unnamed customer supplied a significant share of revenue in the latest reported year. Babcock & Wilcox has also agreed to design and install natural-gas-fired power plants for Base Electron, an independent power producer backed by Applied Digital; the related work enters backlog as customers authorize its scope and provide written commitments.

Babcock & Wilcox also faces privately held Babcock Power and Mitsubishi Power, with results hinging on spending on power generation, industrial steam and emissions control.

  • Applied Digital connects demand for power-intensive data centers to Babcock & Wilcox’s plant work: it leases and hosts computing capacity for hyperscalers and other customers and backs Base Electron, which contracted Babcock & Wilcox to design and install four 300-megawatt gas-fired plants. Watch authorization of the work and written customer commitments, which Babcock & Wilcox said would bring total backlog to $2.8 billion.

  • Ceco Environmental Corp competes with Babcock & Wilcox for power generators’ and industrial plants’ spending on emissions-control equipment and services. Its sales of emissions-management systems to those customers are the part to watch for demand in a market both companies serve.

  • GE Vernova competes with Babcock & Wilcox for electricity producers’ purchases of power-generation equipment and maintenance services. Its Power business is the relevant area to watch for those customers’ equipment and servicing demand, rather than its Wind or Electrification businesses.

  • Fuel Tech, Inc. competes with Babcock & Wilcox to sell combustion facilities systems that reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions, equipment that feeds treatment chemicals, and upgrades to electrostatic dust collectors. Its sales of pollution-control systems and services to utilities, industrial plants and municipal waste-burning facilities offer a focused view of demand in this shared market.

  • BRC Group Holdings, Inc. holds a substantial voting stake in Babcock & Wilcox, so Babcock & Wilcox’s share-price moves materially affect BRC’s reported investment and trading results. BRC earns fees from companies and institutional investors through financing, advisory and brokerage services, but its gains on Babcock & Wilcox shares reflect the holding’s performance, not demand for boilers or emissions-control equipment.
