Company

Company overview

Physicians use Biodesix’s tests at two points in lung care. When a patient has a suspicious lung nodule, Nodify CDT and Nodify XL2 help assess whether it may be cancerous. After a lung cancer diagnosis, GeneStrat tests identify tumor mutations and VeriStrat profiles the patient’s immune response to help guide treatment. Biodesix analyzes blood samples and returns results to healthcare providers, billing Medicare, commercial insurers, medical facilities or patients. This diagnostic testing accounts for most of its revenue.

Its smaller Development Services business serves biopharmaceutical, life sciences, diagnostic and research customers. These customers pay for work ranging from finding biological markers and developing tests to analyzing clinical-trial samples and supporting regulatory submissions and commercialization, under agreements tied to results, milestones or a service period.

The main testing business depends on physicians ordering tests and insurers covering and paying for them. Medicare supplies a substantial share of total revenue, making its coverage decisions and payment rates particularly important. Biodesix must also maintain CLIA laboratory certification and applicable licenses to perform testing and receive payment from government healthcare programs and many private insurers.

Beyond this list, Biodesix faces Foundation Medicine in tumor profiling and relies on Freenome’s U.S. operations as its sole supplier of Nodify CDT materials.

  • Guardant Health competes with Biodesix’s GeneStrat blood tests that help physicians choose lung-cancer treatment, and for testing work paid for by biopharmaceutical companies. Watch its oncology and biopharma testing revenue rather than its screening business for the overlap with Biodesix.

  • Veracyte competes with Biodesix in lung diagnostics, with a test in development that could challenge Nodify’s assessment of whether suspicious lung nodules are cancerous. Its main test revenue comes from prostate and thyroid testing, so lung-test development is the more relevant news for Biodesix holders.

  • bioAffinity Technologies’ sputum-based CyPath Lung competes with Biodesix’s Nodify blood tests to help physicians assess whether suspicious lung nodules are cancerous. CyPath Lung testing revenue is the relevant line to watch, rather than bioAffinity’s total revenue, which also includes pathology services.

  • Tempus AI and Biodesix sell cancer molecular testing to healthcare providers and compete for biopharmaceutical companies’ tumor-profiling and clinical-trial testing work. Tempus’s testing services for those drug developers are the clearest overlap with Biodesix’s Development Services, rather than its broader data-licensing business.

  • Caris Life Sciences overlaps with Biodesix in selling blood-based tumor tests that help physicians select cancer treatment and molecular testing services to biopharmaceutical companies. Its Caris Assure blood test and biopharma testing work are the offerings to watch alongside Biodesix’s GeneStrat and Development Services.

  • NeoGenomics competes with Biodesix for clinicians’ cancer-testing business and biopharmaceutical companies’ tumor-profiling and clinical-trial testing contracts. It provides laboratory testing and expert interpretation to pathology and oncology practices; its pharmaceutical-customer work is the closer comparison for Biodesix’s Development Services.

  • Biodesix depends on Bio-Rad for the core technology, equipment and reagents used to detect cancer mutations in GeneStrat’s droplet digital PCR testing; a supply disruption could affect testing until alternatives are validated. The partners are also developing additional oncology tests, making supply continuity and validation of the ddPLEX ESR1 assay relevant news for Biodesix’s clinical and biopharmaceutical services.

  • BillionToOne’s Northstar blood tests compete with Biodesix’s GeneStrat for physicians choosing treatment for advanced solid tumors, including lung cancer. Its oncology sales expansion is the relevant development to watch, separate from its UNITY prenatal-testing business.

  • Personalis competes with Biodesix for biopharmaceutical companies paying to profile cancer-related immune responses, discover biomarkers and test clinical-trial samples. Its drug-development testing work is the relevant comparison for Biodesix’s Development Services, rather than its physician-facing tests for residual or recurrent cancer.

  • Adaptive Biotechnologies competes with Biodesix for biopharmaceutical immune-profiling work, not primarily for lung-cancer clinical testing. Its Immune Medicine business analyzes immune-cell receptors, while its clonoSEQ clinical tests measure cancer remaining in blood-cancer patients; watch the former for the closer overlap with Biodesix’s Development Services.
