Company

Company overview

Guardant Health analyzes genetic changes in blood and tissue samples to help doctors identify cancer treatments and relevant clinical studies. Clinical oncology testing generates most of its revenue, including tests in the Guardant360 family and Guardant Reveal. Doctors order the tests, and the company bills Medicare, private insurers and patients. It also sells Shield tests for cancer screening, a smaller revenue source.

Biopharmaceutical companies provide the next-largest revenue stream. They pay Guardant for tests and services used in drug development, including developing tests that identify patients suited to particular therapies and obtaining regulatory approval for those tests. Guardant also sells data services through GuardantINFORM.

Revenue depends on doctors adopting the tests and payers agreeing to cover and reimburse them. A limited number of commercial payers supply a substantial share of revenue, and most have not contracted with Guardant as a participating provider. Coverage is limited to eligible uses, and Medicare imposes specific patient and test requirements. Guardant also needs laboratory licenses and certification to perform tests and receive reimbursement. Most revenue comes from testing at its Redwood City, California laboratory, and Illumina is its sole supplier of sequencers and their maintenance and repair.

Guardant Health’s results hinge on cancer-test adoption, payer coverage and screening uptake, but also watch Roche’s Foundation Medicine and Exact Sciences—important rivals absent as standalone entries here.

  • Tempus AI competes with Guardant Health for blood and tissue cancer profiling, tests that detect cancer remaining after treatment, and genomic-data business from drug developers. Watch its testing business with healthcare providers and its data licensing to life-sciences customers: both overlap with Guardant’s revenue sources.

  • Caris Life Sciences, Inc. competes with Guardant Health to help physicians choose cancer treatments using blood and tissue profiling, and to sell oncology testing services to biopharma companies. Its Caris Assure blood test and MI Profile tissue test are concrete offerings to watch in that contest.

  • Natera’s Signatera competes directly with Guardant Health’s Reveal for oncologists’ orders to check blood for cancer remaining after treatment. Signatera’s adoption in cancer monitoring is the part of Natera to watch for this rivalry, rather than its prenatal or transplant tests.

  • Personalis, Inc. competes with Guardant Health for physicians’ cancer recurrence-monitoring and treatment-selection testing, and for genomic-service contracts from biopharma companies. Watch its recurrence-detection testing and services supporting drug development and clinical trials, where their customer needs overlap.

  • GRAIL, Inc. competes with Guardant Health in blood-based early cancer detection and testing services for biopharma partners. Separate its screening news from its research-use testing revenue: the latter depends heavily on partners’ trials, whose delays or cancellations need not reflect demand for Guardant’s Shield screening test.

  • BillionToOne, Inc.’s Northstar blood tests compete with Guardant Health’s oncology tests to help physicians choose treatments and monitor treatment response in patients with late-stage solid tumors. Watch its oncology sales effort, rather than its prenatal business, for signs of how strongly it is pursuing those testing orders.

  • NeoGenomics, Inc. competes with Guardant Health for cancer molecular-testing orders from physicians and hospitals, and testing contracts from drug developers. Its work for community oncology practices and hospital pathology laboratories shows where it reaches the clinical customers Guardant also serves.

  • Guardant Health relies on Illumina alone for the machines that read DNA in its laboratories, as well as their maintenance and repair. Watch equipment supply and service disruptions: they could interrupt Guardant’s testing operations, and switching suppliers could be costly and time-consuming.

  • Myriad Genetics Inc competes with Guardant Health through tumor profiling that helps choose cancer treatments and Precise MRD testing that checks for cancer remaining after treatment. Watch its efforts to build Precise MRD through community medicine, where its existing commercial reach supports that business.

  • Biodesix, Inc. competes with Guardant Health through blood tests that profile lung cancers for treatment decisions and tumor-profiling services sold to drug developers. Watch its GeneStrat tests and tumor-profiling work within Development Services, rather than treating all its lung-diagnostic revenue as direct competition.
